Oscar Piastri was not willing to accept Carlos Sainz’s defense regarding their incident at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Piastri’s weekend turned into an absolute disaster, despite McLaren’s strong work to improve the MCL40, resulting in a first race win of the season for Lando Norris.

The turning point for Piastri’s race, even after a strong start, came when he made contact with Carlos Sainz, as the lapped Williams driver failed to see the Australian coming.

Piastri was understandably frustrated with Sainz and McLaren, as he felt it cost him a chance at a win. And even though Sainz’s contact didn’t lead to Piastri’s DNF, his frustration was understandable.

Sainz defended himself after the incident, but a frustrated Oscar Piastri believes the Spaniard should take accountability for his mistakes.

Oscar Piastri says Carlos Sainz must ‘look in the mirror’ after Hungarian GP incident

Speaking to ESPN and other outlets after the race, Oscar Piastri responded to Carlos Sainz saying he wasn’t to blame for their incident at the Hungarian Grand Prix and didn’t owe him an apology.

Piastri remarked that Sainz was taking his battle at the back of the grid with Fernando Alonso way too seriously, and the way he drove is something he has criticised other drivers for in the past.

“I mean, he was fighting Fernando for last place like it was the world championship and it cost me the lead of the race.

“So, he’s quite critical of others and others have given him some stick before for being frustrating on track. And when you’re going to do something like that, I think maybe you should look in the mirror a bit.”

Well, it’s safe to say that Sainz and Piastri aren’t going to be on each other’s good side for some time. But for Piastri, his concerns have to be far greater than just the incident with Sainz.

Oscar Piastri must figure out how to turn around dire season with McLaren

To say that Piastri’s season has gone poorly would be an understatement. 12 months ago, Piastri was a top contender to win the world championship. Fast forward to now, he finds himself seventh in the standings.

Perhaps Piastri needs to spend time on the simulator over the break and get some more sessions in to try and turn his situation around.

At several points this season, Piastri has looked absolutely defeated after races, as he just isn’t able to get the results he wanted to out of the MCL 40.

Perhaps this summer break has come at the right time for Piastri, as he can disconnect from Formula 1 for some time, and come back with an energised and more motivated mindset.
