‘No one’ at Red Bull dares to say one thing about Adrian Newey since he joined Aston Martin

Aston Martin are now hoping that Adrian Newey can work his magic on the 2026 F1 regulations, having joined the Silverstone squad after his decision to leave Red Bull.

Newey is widely regarded as the greatest designer in Formula 1 history, with his cars having won the F1 drivers’ championship an incredible 14 times and even the constructors’ title 12 times. Only Ferrari with 16 have won the constructors’ title more often by one single outfit.

Red Bull won all six of their constructors’ titles to date with Newey in Milton Keynes, and all eight of their drivers’ titles that Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen won four apiece. Only in 2021 and 2024 among their title-winning years did Red Bull fail to do the double, as well.

But Newey decided to leave Red Bull in May 2024, with the 66-year-old stepping away from their Formula 1 team before leaving at the end of the year. Newey also agreed to join Aston Martin in September 2024 as their managing technical partner, effective from March 2025.

Most of the F1 paddock chased the Briton, yet Aston Martin made Newey a 5% shareholder to seal his arrival as the Silverstone outfit prepares for the 2026 Formula 1 chassis rules. The 2026 F1 regulations are Newey’s priority at Aston Martin over helping out on their 2025 car.

Red Bull are also now having to weigh up when to shift their focus onto next year’s rules, as they sit fourth in the constructors’ standings and trail leaders McLaren by 212 points. Oscar Piastri also boasts a 43-point lead over Verstappen in the drivers’ standings after 10 rounds.

But, while the performance of Red Bull’s car has declined since Newey stepped down in May 2024, OE24 reports that ‘no one’ in Milton Keynes dares to confirm the connection between their problems and his eventual move to Aston Martin, who have improved since his arrival.

While his focus is on the 2026 F1 regulations, Newey has given Aston Martin advice on their 2025 car. This term saw Fernando Alonso have his worst start to a season in 10 years, having failed to score any points over the first eight rounds, but was P9 in Spain and P7 in Canada.

Red Bull announced that Newey had decided to leave the Milton Keynes team ahead of the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, before which Verstappen had won four of the first five Grands Prix. Sergio Perez also started the 2024 F1 season with four podiums during the first five rounds.

Yet since Newey moved over to Red Bull’s RB17 hypercar prior to joining Aston Martin, they have won just seven Grands Prix from a potential 39. Verstappen scored each of those wins, as well as taking all 15 of Red Bull’s Grand Prix podium results since Newey decided to leave.

Verstappen has lost faith in Newey’s successor at Red Bull, Pierre Wache, too, thanks to their problems fixing his car in 2024 and 2025. In contrast, Alonso lauds Newey for raising Aston Martin’s standards with the ‘genius’ now demanding a lot from the engineers in Silverstone.
