Nico Rosberg wonders if Red Bull might need to ‘backtrack’ on 2025 decision they’ve already made

Red Bull’s chances of retaining the constructors’ championship have almost completely slipped away over the last few weeks.

A combination of poor driving from Sergio Perez, and an underdeveloped car has left them 41 points behind McLaren in the standings.

They’re not quite out of the hunt for the drivers’ title yet though, with a 52-point advantage held by Max Verstappen over Lando Norris currently.

In the last seven events, all the Dutchman has to do is finish second without the fastest lap at every race to earn his fourth consecutive crown, but his car makes that a far from certain entity.

Nico Rosberg calls for Red Bull to ‘backtrack’ on development decision

In their current state, it’s hard to see even Verstappen holding on for the championship with such pressure on him in an underperforming car.

The RB20 has shown that it is capable of suffering a shoddy weekend from time to time, and it’s bound to endure another one or two like that.

Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Nico Rosberg believes that they need to turn their attention back to 2024, and away from developing next year’s car, to remain in the fight for glory.

“What’s interesting for me also is the teams. Because you know that the teams usually from the end of spring/summer, they start to put almost 100% resources into next year.

“With the championship fight going on like that, I wonder if Red Bull need to reallocate more resources actually, to this year now and kind of backtrack on that.”

Red Bull fear that United States Grand Prix upgrades won’t work

A near four-week break before the United States Grand Prix provides Red Bull with plenty of time to figure out a solution for their woes.

Team boss Christian Horner admitted that upgrades might not work in Austin, as they attempt to close the gap to McLaren.

Even if they can gain a tenth or two, it could make a massive difference in the grand scheme of things across the seven races.

Daniel Ricciardo lent them a helping hand at the Singapore Grand Prix and stole a point from Norris late in the race for the fastest lap.

They won’t be able to rely on that every weekend though, and as Rosberg mentioned, they may need to think about bringing further additions to their car after Austin.
