Nick Heidfeld is adamant that George Russell will stake his claim for the 2026 F1 title this year, and believes his trouncing of Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes is clear proof that he is capable of it.
George Russell’s ears must be burning ahead of the 2026 F1 season-opener in Melbourne, given the number of times his name has been mentioned in predictions for the world championship.
The Mercedes star is rather confident in his own abilities, too. Russell has seemingly dismissed everyone but Max Verstappen as a genuine threat to his taking of a maiden championship crown in F1.
Some of their rivals are also in agreement that there will be an upcoming title fight that consists of the British driver and his long-time arch-nemesis.
For example, Carlos Sainz believes Russell is the only driver who is capable of stopping Verstappen from adding a fifth championship to his own personal collection.
With the new rules completely overhauling the previous pecking order in the sport, a fascinating season of racing should be in store for F1 fans, and one former driver believes it has Russell’s name written all over it.

Nick Heidfeld explains how George Russell has already proved he is F1 championship material
In a recent appearance on the F1 Insider podcast, former Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld was asked for his predictions on who will win the Australian Grand Prix, as well as the name that will be etched onto the drivers’ championship at the end of the year.
Heidfeld emphatically put Russell’s name forward for both categories before going on to explain his decision.
“At the moment, everyone is saying that Mercedes is dominant, that they haven’t shown everything in the tests, but are still ahead in terms of speed and stability,” he said.
“That was very impressive at the beginning, after such a new set of regulations, that they have already clocked up quite a few kilometres.
“For me, Russell has already shown in recent years, even against a strong Lewis [Hamilton], that he can drive on a par with him or beat him. I see that he still has that spark.”
Over the three years that Russell spent as Hamilton’s counterpart at Mercedes, he managed to get the better of the seven-time world champion in the F1 standings twice.
The most impressive statistic in there is the fact that Russell also managed to do it in his very first season at Mercedes, cementing himself as someone who can lead the Silver Arrows and not just remain in the shadow of his highly successful teammate.

Ferrari are also looking very strong as George Russell takes the majority of F1 title predictions
While Russell and Verstappen have taken much of the plaudits ahead of the new season, it would be wrong to snub Ferrari from being able to end their excruciatingly long 18-year wait for a championship.
In fact, F1 legend Martin Brundle predicts Ferrari to start off very strong, naming Charles Leclerc as his winner for the Australian Grand Prix this weekend.
While some paddock figures believe Hamilton is ‘deluding himself’ by eyeing a shot at another title this season, the 41-year-old has arrived with a newfound sense of optimism regarding the upcoming 24 rounds of racing.
It remains to be seen how the campaign will unfold as F1 teams try to gain an advantage through a series of different upgrades, but it certainly promises to be an explosive season.
