With testing not even underway for the upcoming season, the Formula One world was rocked by news coming out of Mercedes.

It emerged that Lewis Hamilton was going to be leaving the team he had been with since 2013 and joining Ferrari at the end of this season.

Many expected the seven-time champion of the world to finish his career where he currently is, with him seemingly being the perfect co-driver for George Russell to learn from and become the leading racer.

He will however be joining Ferrari to partner Charles Leclerc ahead of the 2025 campaign, with him replacing Carlos Sainz.

Despite becoming a race winner in red, it appears the Spaniard has not done enough to convince those higher up that he is a long-term option.

While there will obviously be plenty of questions over where he is going to end up, there will perhaps be even more as for who is taking over from Hamilton at Mercedes.

Taking everything into account, we believe there is one clear option who should take over.

Mercedes should replace Hamilton with Albon

The relationship between Williams and Mercedes is clear to see, with the step up from Russell seeing him drive for the team before he officially became a member of their team.

For this reason, looking back there will take them to Alex Albon.

While the 27-year-old did not have the success he was hoping for at Red Bull, he has found his feet in the midfield and is regularly pushing for points.

He has also shown sensational situational driving skills too. He stopped once in the entire Australian Grand Prix in 2022 to bring home a point for his team.

He is also very good friends with Russell, and it can’t be underestimated how crucial that can be. You only have to look to the underperforming pair at Alpine to see what can happen when tension exists.
