It appears both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have understood McLaren’s disadvantage this season, and are now working together.
Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri battled it out till the very end to be crowned world champion last season. In the end, Norris walked away victorious, but Piastri showed he was a future world champion in the making.
While Piastri shut down the McLaren rivalry rumours, it was clear during the season that both drivers were desperate to topple the other in their quest for the title.
Did Oscar Piastri just end the debate over McLaren’s papaya rules?
And while there was concern that McLaren hobbled Norris in the battle with Piastri this season, that hasn’t been the case, as both of them have struggled due to McLaren’s poor start to the new campaign.
But between the two drivers, there is now an understanding that didn’t exist last year, thanks in part to McLaren no longer being the team this year.

Will Buxton claims McLaren are ‘absolutely loving’ the difference in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
Will Buxton spoke on Up to Speed about McLaren’s perspective after three races this season. After talking to members of McLaren rave about Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, there seems to be a renewed sense of optimism within the team.
He revealed that both Norris and Piastri are reinvigorated and hungrier this season, but have also put their issues from last year aside and vowed to help get McLaren through this season.
“I think the interesting thing at McLaren this year is if we take a look at both of the drivers, Lando has returned as the reigning world champion. The guys at McLaren are telling me that they feel like they’ve got the old Lando back.
“Last year, he had to be very channelled, very focused, very kind of take himself out of himself a little bit. But now that he’s proven he can win the world championship, doing it his way, and racing the way that he likes to race, that weight has kind of been alleviated… They’re absolutely loving that.
“Similarly, Oscar has returned determined to show again that he has stepped up, that he’s at a level where he can fight for victories and for World championships, which he proved last year, but redoubled in that this year.
“And yet, at the same time, both of them are aware that they’re not in a team that the moment is the favourite… If you’re not in the top team, you have to work together as teammates.
“McLaren told me today that one of the biggest things they’ve noticed out of both Lando and Oscar this year is a willingness to work together, to ride the bumps, to get themselves back to a position where they are the number one team again… That’s a real positive for the team.”

Will Buxton reveals what McLaren engineers are saying about the MCL40 this season
Speaking further during the podcast, Buxton also revealed that McLaren engineers have admitted the MCL40’s chassis needs a lot of work to be a top car this season.
“When a team is fighting for a championship, and there’s a huge regulation change coming, the teams that aren’t fighting for that world championship can realign their focus.
“They can look to the next year, they can look to working on that because they’re not working to develop a car that’s fighting for a world title in that moment. McLaren obviously came very close to missing out to Max. And they had to put the work in on 2025. Have they lost out a little bit in the run-up to 2026?
“I was talking to the guys from McLaren earlier today, and they said, ‘Obviously, there were comments at the start of the year about Mercedes power unit and needing to understand that a little bit more.’
“But they’ve since taken a look at the car and realised, ‘You know what, guys, we’ve actually got a lot of work to do on the chassis side of things…’ Let’s give them some time to pull it back.”
Piastri earning a P2 finish at the Japanese Grand Prix showed everyone that McLaren still have life this season. Right now, their focus should be on improving the car wherever possible.
McLaren want the Miami upgrades for a better understanding of the power unit. The next few weeks are crucial for them as a team.
