McLaren CEO Zak Brown has two very exciting months ahead of him.

The Formula 1 season is finally set to enter its final stages ahead of back-to-back month-long breaks in the campaign following the races in Belgium and Singapore.

McLaren entered the summer break knowing that they had an opportunity to overtake Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship.

The Woking-based team head to the United States Grand Prix hoping to defend a 42-point lead, highlighting the advantage they currently have over the rest of the field.

Winning that championship is the minimum they will want to achieve at this stage to consider the campaign a success.

However, Lando Norris will also have one eye on overturning Max Verstappen’s advantage in the Drivers’ Championship to deliver a historic double for Zak Brown and Andrea Stella’s team.

That’s going to be easier said than done with Red Bull and their other close rivals Ferrari and McLaren expected to deliver their final significant update packages in Austin, while Stella has been cautious about McLaren making any key changes to their car.

Journalist Ian Parkes was speaking to the RacingNews365 Podcast and admitted recently speaking to Brown about McLaren’s championship credentials.

He suggested that Brown was getting more and more annoyed about the constant questioning about whether McLaren felt they were going to win the title.

His answer tells us a lot about the mindset within McLaren heading into the final six races of the year.

Zak Brown ‘increasingly fed up’ with questions about McLaren’s title hopes

Talking about how McLaren are now the favourites to win their first championship this century, Parkes said: “I spoke to Zak Brown recently the McLaren chief executive and he mentioned to me that he was becoming increasingly fed up with people pretty much saying that to him.

“It’s a case, a very simple case and one adopted by the team principal Andrea Stella that, and we hear it in football as well, one game at a time, this is simply one Grand Prix at a time.

“As we’ve just discussed, right now, we do not know how that Red Bull is going to perform with its new floor in Austin.

“It holds a huge significant key to unlocking what is going to follow over the five Grand Prix that will then take place after Austin.”

Jenson Button tells McLaren to use Michael Schumacher tactic to win both championships

Although Norris is the driver who has the potential to catch Verstappen over the next six Grand Prix, all eyes may well up end up being on his teammate Oscar Piastri.

Piastri showed with his daring move at the Italian Grand Prix that he won’t sit back and let Norris drive off into the distance for the good of his championship campaign.

While McLaren may have warned the Australian not to try and pull off that move again this season, Piastri will know that he can secure Norris the title by making sure he beats Verstappen at every opportunity.

Jenson Button has told McLaren to implement the tactic Michael Schumacher used at Ferrari where he was always the number one driver.

While it’s likely to only be a temporary measure to avoid upsetting the young Australian in the long run, it may be necessary to make sure Norris can overturn his Dutch rival’s impressive advantage.
