Max Verstappen has been told to ‘get used to it’ after sharing his complaints about the new Formula 1 regulations.
Throughout the early stages of the 2026 Formula 1 season, Max Verstappen has been open about his opinion on the new regulations that have been implemented into the sport.
The Dutch driver has compared the new regulations to ‘Formula E on steroids’ and has said he is better off ‘practising a bit of Mario Kart’ rather than using the simulator.
Although the majority of the drivers share Verstappen’s opinion, they have not been as vocal as the four-time World Champion. This has led to many telling Verstappen to stay quiet on his views and to get on with the job at hand.
Would Max Verstappen be complaining about F1’s 2026 regulations if he had joined Mercedes?
Alexander Wurz tells Max Verstappen to ‘get used to it’
During the opening episode of Lift and Roast, Alexander Wurz was asked about Verstappen’s open criticism of the 2026 Formula 1 regulations.
Wurz was quick to state that Verstappen needs to ‘get used to it’ as the new regulations will not be changed quickly and Red Bull will improve.
Wurz said, “Look, I’m not the youngest anymore. But – and I mean this – I’ve got used to the idea of letting emotions run free, of letting them out. He’s obviously not happy with the situation either, with where his team is, with the rules, and I understand that completely, 100%.
“But somehow, we’re in this situation now, and we can’t change it by tomorrow. We can’t change it by the day after tomorrow, and we can’t change it over the next three years. We can only try to a) get used to it, and b) see that I don’t actually think it’s that bad or that terrible.
“The teams will improve; his team will improve too. The performance will become more closely matched, and I can well imagine that if we find a way to return to flat-out qualifying, so that the driver who keeps his foot on the throttle the longest and uses the brakes the least is rewarded.
“Right now it’s exactly the opposite, even in qualifying. I get that it’s not great, but if we can bring back that aspect of driving at full throttle, then the battles in the race are exciting and you’ve got proper close-quarters fighting, you know, not too artificial. Australia was too artificial for me; China was better. The gaps will keep closing a bit more and it’ll get harder to overtake. I think we’ll then have an acceptable balance in this.”
Is Toto Wolff planting the seeds for poaching Max Verstappen from Red Bull? 🤔
Will Max Verstappen remain at Red Bull or move teams?
There has been speculation in recent years that, despite having a contract with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season, Verstappen will not remain with the team for that long.
The biggest rumour has been that Verstappen will leave Red Bull, with whom he has been since 2016, in favour of a move to Mercedes alongside George Russell or Kimi Antonelli.
Mike Hezemans added fuel to the fire after the Chinese Grand Prix as he said, “Toto [Wolff] is going to talk to Max when his car is so fast that Max actually needs a Mercedes. That is the case now.”
In a recent interview, Russell has said that his dream Formula 1 teammate from the current grid would be Verstappen. Toto Wolff reacted to this statement from Russell by saying, “I think George is saying that because Max is widely considered as the best in the business and George wants to show that Max is not the best in the business.”
