Max Verstappen secured a strong P2 at the Hungarian Grand Prix despite his frustrations with the car during the race. He was also raging over the backmarkers ahead of him.

The Dutchman lined up fourth for the Hungarian Grand Prix, but he was not looking comfortable in the RB22. A spin in Q3 marked another issue with Red Bull’s ‘Macarena’ rear wing – his third in the last four races.

Verstappen was kept on a ‘tight leash’ after qualifying as Red Bull called an immediate meeting to discuss the problem. It would not haunt him on Sunday as the Dutchman finished P2 behind race winner Lando Norris.

Max Verstappen blasts ‘morons’ in the midfield as Hungarian GP sees blue flag issues

Verstappen had been complaining about his shifts during the race as he generally lacked the pace of the McLarens. But Oscar Piastri’s gearbox failure moved him onto the podium, and he was able to keep Kimi Antonelli and the Ferraris behind on worn soft tyres.

It was a solid drive from the four-time champion, but his race could have gone much differently. A GPS issue confused drivers about blue flags and who had them, and Verstappen got caught in the middle of it.

The Red Bull unleashed his fury over his radio, which was not broadcast, calling for backmarkers to be penalised. He said: “Mate what the hell are they doing???”, before adding: “They should get a penalty! This is f—— ridiculous! These morons! My god!”

It was not just Verstappen who was angry about the blue flags. Charles Leclerc got stuck behind a Williams in the closing stages, prompting him to say over his radio: “What the f—!”

Piastri made contact with Carlos Sainz as the Williams driver received blue flags. The McLaren driver was absolutely furious, saying: “Get out of the f—— way you idiot! Oh my god,” with the Spaniard being penalised for the incident.

If this Max Verstappen move on Lewis Hamilton isn’t the best overtake of the season, then what is?

In the cooldown room after the race, Antonelli and Norris even said that they were getting blue flags, even though they were trying to get past those who should have been getting them and moving out of the way.

Antonelli said: “I was getting the blue flags so much! I went on the radio and I asked, ‘What am I getting the blue flags for? Hello?’”

Norris added: “I think they were just giving them to anyone, even I had a blue flag at one point!”
