Max Verstappen met with F1 CEO at Belgian Grand Prix after ‘Formula 3’ complaints

Max Verstappen has once again hit out at the new Formula 1 regulations, and the timing of it was interesting, given his meeting with Stefano Domenicali.

Verstappen managed to finish P2 at the Belgian Grand Prix, despite facing issues with his car throughout the weekend at Spa.

Many fans criticised Red Bull’s car for costing Verstappen pole at Spa, believing that the team hadn’t done enough to get the four-time world champion a competitive car.

While the Dutch driver has often been critical of Red Bull’s car this year, Verstappen has been very critical of the new regulations as well.

And after Max Verstappen made his most recent comments about the regulations, some believe that his meeting with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali may have been more of the same.

Max Verstappen may have rubbed in his frustration with F1 during Spa meeting with Stefano Domenicali

According to Erik van Haren of De Telegraaf, Max Verstappen had a scheduled meeting with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend.

There is no word on what exactly the pair discussed, but one can imagine the superstar’s issues with the new ruleset would have been a topic of discussion.

This is not the first time Verstappen and Domenicali have met this season, as the four-time world champion’s comments have caught the eye of one of F1’s biggest figures.

And with Verstappen threatening to retire if the regulations don’t change, Formula 1 officials, including Domenicali, tried to intervene to keep one of the biggest names in the sport happy.

But van Haren suggested that this meeting took place on Sunday morning, after qualifying the day before, which is what makes the timing of Verstappen’s post-qualifying critique of the new regulations all the more interesting.

Max Verstappen compared current regulations to Formula 3 after Belgian GP

Speaking after qualifying, Max Verstappen likened the current Formula 1 cars under the new ruleset to driving a Formula 3 car but with the downforce experienced in the premier racing competition.

“Well, I mean, for most of sector two, you run just on the engine, so what is that? Four hundred and fifty, five hundred horsepower, something like that, which is, I guess, more or less what a Formula 3 car has, but with F1 downforce.

“So, you can imagine, of course, that that is not very exciting to drive. But honestly, I don’t want to sit here and complain again because probably someone will shoot me outside the door.

“Like I said before, I’m mentally just adjusting to it, and I’m trying to make the best out of it, even though, of course, it’s not what I like or what I love to do in Formula 1. But I can also sit at home and drive nothing, and that also doesn’t do anything, so I’m just trying my best.”

As things stand, Verstappen’s future with Red Bull is very much up in the air, not just because of his considering retirement, but also because of his frustration with the team’s performances.

Red Bull are trying to convince Verstappen to stay, but given their recent run of form, it’s hard to see how exactly they will convince him.
