Martin Brundle and the rest of the watching world were absolutely amazed by Fernando Alonso’s performance in Brazil today.

Covering the race at Interlagos for Sky Sports F1, Martin Brundle and David Croft were enjoying one of the best fights of the season in the closing laps.

Max Verstappen had done what he always seems to do now and driven off into the distance to claim his 17th race win of the season.

He was followed by Lando Norris who recorded another second place after a phenomenal initial start.

With the Mercedes drivers having a nightmare Sunday and Ferrari being slightly off the pace, it meant Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso were fighting it out for third place.

The Spanish veteran ended up coming out on top by the smallest of margins over the line.

Martin Brundle was loving Alonso’s performance in Brazil as Aston Martin finally showed some of the performance that saw them challenging Red Bull at the start of the year.

Even Lance Stroll was catching the pair towards the end, but it was Alonso’s experience that saw him take advantage of the smallest error from Perez to secure a well-deserved podium.

Going into the penultimate lap, Sergio Perez finally got a run on Alonso and took third place from his rival.

However, the Aston Martin with DRS was supremely fast and going into the first corner for the final time, Alonso was right behind the Mexican.

Perez drifted slightly wide and that was all Alonso needed to make the move going into turn four.

Commentating on the incredible action, David Croft said: “Fernando Alonso, never, ever gives up!”

Martin Brundle added: “A drag race up the hill we’ve got now, what can [Sergio] Perez do, can he get in the slipstream?

“Fantastic driving there, Perez was just busy watching his rival going too deep into turn one, put him out of position for two and three, and Alonso punished him immediately. What a drive!”

Croft concluded: “Take a bow, both of you.”

The incredible crowd in Brazil must have agreed with Brundle as after the podium ceremony they were singing Alonso’s name.

After a tough weekend in Mexico City, Alonso looked back to his best today and showed why he was a previous world champion.

Sergio Perez is undoubtedly in the faster car and with one more lap might have just nabbed that podium.

But Alonso drove the race to perfection and earned Aston Martin an important 15 points.
