Martin Brundle reacts after Max Verstappen called out Lewis Hamilton’s ‘not right’ driving

Max Verstappen criticised Lewis Hamilton for moving under braking after passing him at the Hungarian Grand Prix, which came as a surprise to Martin Brundle.

The Dutchman finished P2 in Budapest behind winner Lando Norris, while his Ferrari rival came home fifth after being hit with a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Toto Wolff thought Hamilton would win the Hungarian Grand Prix, but Ferrari could not take advantage of their package. Verstappen complained about his shifts and backmarkers during the race, but he held on to finish second.

After stopping for the hard compound tyre, the Red Bull driver produced a divebomb into turn one and passed the Ferrari star. Hamilton did not see Verstappen coming as he came into the corner.

After the overtake, the Dutchman complained that Hamilton had moved under braking. Race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase said after the move: “Well that was quite special,” to which Verstappen replied: I don’t want to complain but that was again moving under braking. I mean, it’s nice action, but it’s not right.”

Speaking via Sky Sports F1, commentator David Croft offered his thoughts on the incident: “Well, I don’t know. I thought that was quite fair, to be honest. But that’s just me.”

Brundle added: “I’d like to see it again, but I’m surprised to hear Max complaining about that one. I’m not entirely sure Lewis knew he was coming, it was such a damned dear move on the brakes.

“But they was heading towards the apex, they didn’t touch, did leave him racing room. I don’t think the stewards will be looking at it.”

Croft then said: “Might have been a subtle early turn in, and a little bit similar to where they clash there in the past, but come on Max, you’re ahead of Lewis now.”

Verstappen felt Hamilton ‘wasn’t paying attention’ as he made the lunge into turn one. The seven-time champion is now 50 points behind Kimi Antonelli heading into the summer break.
