Martin Brundle has admitted that McLaren driver Oscar Piastri may get into too many scraps on track after his 10th place finish in Las Vegas.

Brundle was reviewing the race for Sky Sports F1 as the paddock heads to Abu Dhabi for the final Grand Prix of the season.

There was plenty of expectation on the event surrounding the race in Las Vegas, but few fans would have expected as much action as there was on track.

The likes of Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon showed it was possible to make your way through the pack with the right strategy and a bit of luck.

They both went out in Q1 but managed to finish in the top five which you couldn’t ever see happening in Monaco for example.

The other driver who went out in Q1 and finished in the points was Oscar Piastri.

After seeing his teammate crash out in the opening laps and nearly collect him in the process, Piastri was working his way through the pack as well.

He was up in fourth place at one point but needed to pit during the final laps to fulfil his tyre obligations.

However, Piastri was caught out by Lewis Hamilton in Las Vegas making contact that forced them both to pit with punctures and Brundle believes he needs to be more careful on track.

The young Australian is clearly very fast and has driven superbly during his rookie season.

But he needs to be more aware of his surroundings at times, although he wasn’t the only driver caught out at the weekend.

Brundle says Piastri needs to be more careful after Las Vegas GP

Speaking about the Australian, Brundle said: “Oscar Piastri scored fastest lap and had a super-aggressive drive from his lowly grid position.

“He perhaps gets involved in too many skirmishes, this time a racing incident with Hamilton, but when he adds better control and judgement to his speed given more experience, he’ll be mighty.”

Brundle is nitpicking when it comes to Piastri’s performance in Las Vegas the 22-year-old looks like one of the most exciting talents in motorsport right now.

He’s already got a Sprint Race win under his belt and Lando Norris has proven that their McLaren is fast enough to consistently challenge for podiums.

Piastri will want to be racing at the very front of the grid next year and helping McLaren challenge the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and maybe even Red Bull.

The fact he’s got a contract until 2026 shows just how much faith the team have in him.

Only Max Verstappen – and Lance Stroll’s unique situation at Aston Martin – has a longer contract in F1 right now.
