Martin Brundle laments one of the ‘biggest mistakes’ Formula 1 has ever made

Martin Brundle has been talking about one of the biggest mistakes Formula 1 has ever made that he believes is still a problem today.

Surprisingly, he’s not referring to Max Verstappen’s domination as Red Bull picked up where they left off at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Commentating on the Dutchman’s 55th win on Sky Sports F1, Brundle lamented something he really despises about modern F1.

We’re entering the third year of stable regulations in Formula 1 although many fans will be praying for 2026 to roll around much sooner.

Red Bull have absolutely nailed the current set of rules with Adrian Newey flexing his creative genius again this year to extend his team’s lead over the rest of the grid.

The likes of Ferrari and Mercedes have tried to make steps forward but the 22-second lead Verstappen had over his teammate – let alone the rest of the grid – highlights they still have work to do.

However, there’s another part of modern Formula 1 that Brundle believes is one of the biggest mistakes the sport has ever made.

The change was made ten years ago now and looks unlikely to be reserved any time soon…

Formula 1 engines don’t sound like they used to…

During the race, David Croft commented: “On what is the 10th anniversary by the way of these 1.6ltr V6 hybrid engines that we started racing with here in Bahrain in 2014.”

Brundle replied: “Hateful things, biggest mistakes Formula 1 has ever made.

“They’re way too big and heavy, aren’t they? But anyway, we’ve got them so we better make the most of them.”

While Brundle might think the most recent Formula 1 engines are one of the sport’s biggest mistakes, there’s a reason they’ve been introduced.

The most iconic sounds associated with F1 are the classic V10 engines and the noise they make will never be replicated.

Formula 1 is striving to be a more sustainable sport and part of that involved changing to V6 engines, they’re also much cheaper to produce.

Unfortunately, it does mean that iconic tracks such as Spa and Monza don’t quite sound as good as they used to.

It’s difficult to see the engines changing again any time soon, although, with all the technology that exists these days, it can’t be too difficult to find a way to alter the sound to make them more appealing.
