Arvid Lindblad was the sole rookie debutant at the Australian Grand Prix today, but the 18-year-old showed talent beyond his experience during a fierce battle with Max Verstappen in Melbourne.
When the five lights went out to begin the 2026 F1 season, Arvid Lindblad may be forgiven for thinking he was dreaming after finding himself in third place on the grid’s first rotation of the Albert Park Circuit today.
The young British driver ended up taking the chequered flag in P8, one lap behind George Russell, who kicked off F1’s new era with a barnstorming victory for the Silver Arrows.
Lindblad began the race from P9 on the grid after an impressive first qualifying session on the prior day. While it was one to remember for Racing Bulls’ newest star, it was a session to forget for Max Verstappen, whose crash in Q1 saw him start from P20 in the Grand Prix.
However, as is the norm when the four-time world champion starts at the back of the pack, it didn’t take long for Verstappen to get within the mix of the top-10 during the race, and the Dutchman quickly found himself on the gearbox of Lindblad’s VCARB03.

Martin Brundle praises Arvid Lindblad for ‘keeping his head’ against Max Verstappen in Australian GP
During Sky Sports F1’s live coverage of the 2026 F1 season-opener, Martin Brundle couldn’t help but heap praise on Lindblad for his efforts to keep Verstappen behind him during a fierce battle between the two drivers.
After a virtual safety car was called upon to retrieve Valtteri Bottas’ stricken Cadillac F1 car, Verstappen managed to get the jump on his much younger rival on the restart, but the rookie fought tooth and nail to keep the four-time world champion in his rear-view mirrors.
Commentator David Croft talked through the action, saying, “Max Verstappen is right on it behind Arvid Lindblad, who moves over to the left-hand side and slams the door shut in the face of the four-time world champion. A rookie against a four-time world champion!”
His words were followed by Brundle, who was complimentary of the 18-year-old’s racecraft.
He said, “Sister team, of course, but Lindblad, in his first Grand Prix, has made it clear that he won’t be intimidated by Max Verstappen, who has gone very wide in turn three.
“The opposite of the 18-year-old, who is keeping his head under extreme pressure. There’s nothing between these two teams anymore, where they used to say, ‘Eh, just let them go, move over, please?’ There isn’t a world championship at stake at the moment.”

Jenson Button also hailed Arvid Lindblad for his ‘special’ battle vs Max Verstappen
In Sky Sports F1’s post-race analysis, 2009 world champion Jenson Button was able to collar Lindblad for some comments following the chequered flag, and offered his own words of congratulations for the rookie’s special feat.
His P8 finish saw him become the first driver to secure debut points since Kimi Antonelli’s P4 at the Australian Grand Prix last year.
In reference to the duel with Verstappen, Button called Lindblad’s on-track defence “amazing”, while also noting that it was “pretty special” to see the 18-year-old go toe-to-toe with one of F1’s greats.
