Martin Brundle explains why Lewis Hamilton will be ‘miffed’ after British GP qualifying

Mercedes have locked out the front row of a Grand Prix for the first time since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at Silverstone.

In front of hundreds of thousands of home fans, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and McLaren star Lando Norris completed a British top three that hasn’t been achieved since the 1960s.

All eyes will now be on Sunday’s race to see who can take the victory with Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri just behind them waiting to pounce on any mistakes.

Commentating on British Grand Prix qualifying for Sky Sports F1, former driver Martin Brundle was talking about the seven-time world champion display during the final qualifying session.

On two separate occasions, Hamilton went to the top of the timing screens in Q3 and nearly achieved his first pole position since Hungary last year.

However, Russell continued his fine form from the previous weekend when he won the Austrian Grand Prix to set the fastest time of the day in front of a delighted home crowd.

Brundle explained why Hamilton might be feeling ‘miffed’ despite a brilliant qualifying session for Mercedes.

It’s the sort of mentality that a driver has to have, especially after winning more than 100 Grand Prix.

Talking at the end of qualifying, David Croft said: “So, Lewis Hamilton, his consolation is an 11^th front row here at Silverstone which ties the record at a single circuit, I think Lewis had previously achieved this at Abu Dhabi and the Hungaroring as well.”

Brundle added: “Kids these days, they spoil your day! Lewis will be miffed with that because he’s driven a stormer and young George [Russell] has sneaked in front of him for all the glory.”

It wouldn’t have come as a massive surprise to Hamilton that Russell will able to edge him out in qualifying once again.

The seven-time world champion has only out-qualified Russell twice in qualifying this season, although he did get the better of his teammate during Sprint Race qualifying in China which led to a 2^nd-place finish in the race.

Hamilton admitted earlier in the season that he didn’t expect to beat Russell in qualifying again this season.

He also handed Russell a newer part at the Monaco Grand Prix and with his move to Ferrari now approaching quickly, it’s not a surprise that Russell may start to be preferred by the team sooner rather than later.

Mercedes have told Lewis Hamilton why he keeps losing to George Russell

After two seasons of appearing to be in the wilderness, Mercedes finally seem to fully understand their car and it’s delivering impressive results.

While Red Bull and McLaren still appear to be the quickest teams – Sergio Perez’s struggles aside – Mercedes are not far away and seem to have opened up a gap over Ferrari.

However, throughout the campaign, Russell has seemed to have the edge over Hamilton.

Mercedes have since explained why that might be the case although that won’t help Hamilton as he seeks one final victory with the team that helped him earn six world championships before he moves on.

Even though Hamilton is way off Norris in the Drivers’ Championship, the youngster has explained why he still thinks he’s not on the same level as the 39-year-old.

His reputation precedes him, but Hamilton will know that reputation doesn’t earn you race wins and he’ll be desperate to add another British Grand Prix victory to his collection on Sunday.
