Oscar Piastri lost out on an extra three points in the title battle with Lando Norris after the Briton managed to finish ahead of him in the Italian Grand Prix.
Norris qualified ahead of Piastri after taking a higher downforce setup in qualifying, and in the race it paid off with the Briton outclassing his teammate.
But there was late drama in the race when McLaren swapped priority in the pits to Piastri, and a slow pit stop put Norris out behind his teammate. McLaren instructed Piastri to relinquish the position, with Andrea Stella also confirming that they would review the decision that led to the strategy in the first place.
Despite the controversy, there was one moment from Piastri that Martin Brundle thought was “hugely impressive”, which he highlighted in his latest Sky Sports F1 column.

Martin Brundle praises Oscar Piastri for overtake on Charles Leclerc
Piastri lost a place to Charles Leclerc at the start of the race after getting a poor exit out of the first chicane while duelling for the lead with Norris and Max Verstappen.
But the Australian would pull off an impressive overtake on the Ferrari driver heading into the first Lesmo, hanging his McLaren around the outside to retake third.
Brundle praised him for the move, especially as the Australian pulled it off with a full tank of fuel onboard and cold tyres from sitting on the grid.
“Piastri lost out a little behind this scuffle and Leclerc passed him, only for Piastri to sail around the outside of the first Lesmo corner in hugely impressive style,” said Brundle.
“Leclerc would come back at him and they raced hard, and championship leader Piastri’s front wing and suspensions were frequently at high risk, but the control and judgement (and trust) these frontrunning megastars have is quite something to observe.”
Oscar Piastri impresses with two brilliant overtakes this season
It is not the first time this season that Piastri has pulled off an impressive overtake around the outside of a Ferrari driver.
During the Australian Grand Prix, Piastri earned praise for his overtake on Lewis Hamilton, in which he took ninth place from the seven-time world champion with a move around the outside of the high-speed Turn 9 in damp conditions.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Oscar Piastri | 324 |
| 2 | Lando Norris | 293 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 230 |
| 4 | George Russell | 194 |
| 5 | Charles Leclerc | 163 |
| 6 | Lewis Hamilton | 117 |
| 7 | Alexander Albon | 70 |
| 8 | Andrea Kimi Antonelli | 66 |
| 9 | Isack Hadjar | 38 |
| 10 | Nico Hulkenberg | 37 |
Piastri was keen to make up for his error earlier in the race, which saw him drop to the back of the grid when he skated off track in the wet conditions and struggled to rejoin the track.
The Australian would put the disappointing home performance behind him by winning races in China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Miami, and is now leading the championship heading into the next eight rounds.
