Marin Brundle raves about 25-year-old F1 driver who had ‘very fine race’ in Las Vegas GP

Formula 1 legend Martin Brundle was raving about Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll during the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Brundle was once again joined by David Croft in the commentary box as they covered the race for Sky Sports F1 (19/11, 7:26am) yesterday.

It was a race full of twists and turns and exactly what the organisers would have wanted for their return to Las Vegas.

The previous track in the city – built in Caesars Palace car park – was uninspiring and as such was only on the calendar for two years.

However, the ten-year contract signed with Las Vegas for this latest iteration already looks like a great decision.

Several drivers put in some exceptional performances from further down the grid.

Three drivers who started in the bottom five ended up scoring points yesterday.

Oscar Piastri came from 18^th to 10^th, via a collision with Lewis Hamilton and earned the fastest lap as well.

Alpine driver Esteban Ocon made up 12 positions to finish fourth and narrow the gap between himself and teammate Pierre Gasly going into the final race of the season.

However, Lance Stroll made up the most place in Las Vegas and Martin Brundle was very impressed with the 25-year-old this weekend.

The Canadian typically goes under the radar due to the performances of his teammate Fernando Alonso.

He’s now recorded back-to-back fifth places and is ending the 2023 season on a high.

Brundle enjoyed Stroll’s performance in Las Vegas

Speaking about Aston Martin towards the end of the race, Brundle said: “Stroll is having, and we haven’t seen much of him, we haven’t heard much about him, but he’s having a very fine race is Lance Stroll, as he hones in on Esteban Ocon.”

Stroll admitted earlier in the season that he needed to make a simple change to try and match his teammate.

While Alonso was recording podium after podium at the start of the season, Stroll was competing for minor points.

That’s been the case for much of the season and he’s going to finish the year as the highest-ranked driver on the grid without a top-three finish.

He needs a strong car underneath him to challenge further up the grid next season but every team will have been working on their 2024 vehicle for a while now.

There’s still plenty to play for in Abu Dhabi for a lot of teams including Aston Martin who will be desperate to make up the 11-point gap to McLaren.
