Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson has been touted to make a cameo appearance in the Australian Supercars Championship during the five-week break in the 2026 F1 season.

Formula 1 has hit pause on the 2026 season after only three rounds due to the cancellations of the races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia that were scheduled to be run in April. Red Bull star Max Verstappen is utilising the early stoppage in the F1 calendar to run additional GT3 tests.

Aston Martin ace Lance Stroll will also now take part in the GT World Challenge Europe race at Paul Ricard on what was originally due to be the weekend of the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix. A report has also linked Racing Bulls racer Lawson with a cameo in Aussie Supercars this April.

Liam Lawson would be ‘excited’ to make a Supercars cameo but will not in April

However, while Thomas Maher reports that Lawson would be ‘quite excited’ about making a cameo in the Australian Supercars Championship, the chances of the Kiwi doing so this April are not said to be likely. Instead, Lawson will keep the door ajar for a possible future cameo.

Maher even claims the idea of Lawson featuring in Supercars during F1’s early-season break came from an April Fool’s joke that gained traction. It was suggested that Lawson could take part in the races in New Zealand if one of the full-season drivers agreed to give up their seat.

Also, The New Zealand Herald notes that a spokesperson ruled out the reports that Lawson could make a cameo in Supercars. They said: “It was an idea that came up to have a crack at making something happen. Definitely an idea, but it had not gone much further than that.”

Supercars is due to race in New Zealand at the Taupo Super 440 on April 10-12 and then the Christchurch Super 440 on April 17-19. But while The New Zealand Herald adds that Lawson is due to return home to renew his passport, he is due to return to Europe before the races.

Lawson has enjoyed a strong start to the 2026 F1 season, but the break in the calendar has opened the door for drivers to try their hands in other categories. The 24-year-old sits 10th in the F1 drivers’ standings with 10 points, two fewer than Red Bull stablemate Verstappen.

Despite having a strong start to the year, Lawson is keen to improve in qualifying, which he will be expected to practice in Racing Bulls’ simulator during the break. The F1 season will resume in Miami on May 1-3 before another brief gap until the Canadian GP on May 22-24.
