Liam Lawson’s ‘most likely’ 2025 F1 team suggested if he misses out on RB seat

Liam Lawson is patiently waiting in the Visa Cash App RB garage waiting to discover his Formula 1 fate.

After the Canadian Grand Prix, the Red Bull have decided three-quarters of their driver line-up for the 2025 F1 season.

It appears as though it’s going to come down to a battle between Liam Lawson and Daniel Ricciardo – with Isack Hadjar impressing in the background in Formula 2 – for one seat at Visa Cash App RB.

Speaking on The Race Podcast, journalists Edd Straw and Ben Anderson have been speaking about Lawson’s other potential options on the grid.

Time is running out for drivers to secure contracts up and down the paddock with the jigsaw pieces of the 2025 puzzle beginning to fall into place.

Even available seats at teams like Mercedes and Aston Martin appear to be sewn up with youngster Kimi Antonelli and Lance Stroll in a very strong position.

Lawson is far from out of the running to replace Ricciardo in 2025 – or potentially before this campaign even finishes.

However, the most likely team Lawson could end up at next year is Alpine, although this is still seen as a long shot.

That’s because they’ve got a young driver of their own that they might end up promoting.

Alpine the ‘most likely’ team Liam Lawson could join if he misses out on RB seat

There is a very good chance that the last two teams to have an available seat for 2025 are RB and Alpine.

For the Red Bull group, knowing they have an option on Ricciardo and Lawson means they don’t have any emphasis to make an immediate decision.

The only reason they would do so is if Ricciardo’s performances fall away to such an extent that he needs to be immediately replaced by Lawson.

While the Kiwi was a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for free at the end of the year if he’s not signed by RB, that might be pointless by the time it’s activated.

Alpine haven’t filled either seat for next year although they want to retain Pierre Gasly.

Liam Lawson would be a very strong teammate for the Frenchman as proved by his cameo last year.

However, Jack Doohan has come through their academy and is also pushing hard to partner the one-time race winner.

It makes a move for Lawson unlikely and it’s hard to imagine them holding on to see whether Lawson gets the RB seat or not to make their final call on Doohan.

Liam Lawson the latest young driver stuck in limbo outside of Formula 1

Asked what Lawson’s chances are of securing outside RB if they decide to stick with Daniel Ricciardo for 2025, Straw said: “Yes, there is a chance they pass on [Liam] Lawson and his chances outside of Red Bull don’t look great.

“I guess Alpine would be the one that would be most likely because there’s no Audi interest and Haas will want an experienced driver to put alongside Ollie Bearman.

“So, that would be [Valtteri] Bottas, [Esteban] Ocon or perhaps even a reprieve for Kevin Magnussen.”

Anderson added: “Alpine would go [Jack] Doohan though, wouldn’t they? If they’re going to put a youngster in they’d take their own rather than Lawson surely?”

Straw replied: “Well probably, but there’s also the vague chance that [Pierre] Gasly might move on as well so that they could have two available. Alpine’s the only driver situation where it could evolve to include Lawson.

“I don’t think it will but it’s possible.”

Even if Alpine is the most likely team to move for Lawson outside of the Red Bull group, it still looks like an outside bet.

There will be a handful of established F1 stars such as Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu who might be available and would be above Lawson on their shortlist.

There could be a few rookies on the grid in 2025, but Lawson’s participation is hanging in the balance.
