Liam Lawson has made an impression since replacing Daniel Ricciardo at Visa Cash App RB after the Singapore Grand Prix.

In the three races that he has started this year, he has landed himself in hot water with Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez following incidents on track between the two experienced drivers.

Lawson was on the receiving end of a heated discussion with Alonso in parc ferme after the US Grand Prix Sprint, after he seemingly allowed Esteban Ocon to overtake the pair through his defensive driving.

He would then incur the wrath of Perez at his home race in Mexico, when the pair made contact which effectively ruined the Red Bull driver’s race. Perez went on to accuse Lawson of taking points away from Red Bull drivers, given they are fighting for the Constructors’ title with McLaren and Ferrari.

Lawson’s father was less than impressed with his antics on track, with him giving his son a telling off after he did one thing to Perez during the Mexico GP according to the 21-year-old when speaking on TFN.

Liam Lawson’s dad told him off for giving Sergio Perez the finger in Mexico

Lawson had grown frustrated with Perez during the Mexico race after the pair found themselves close to each other on track throughout the race in Mexico.

At one stage, the New Zealander could be seen on his onboard giving him the finger as he passed down the start/finish straight, something his dad did not take kindly to seeing.

“My dad told me off, yeah, as my dad has done many times over the years,” said Lawson.

“[I’m] very fortunate to have someone like my dad who has played a massive role in, obviously, raising me as a man, but also as a driver, growing up and trying to be professional in the sport. And he’s kept me very grounded, I would say, and that’s been something that he’s done since I was a kid.

“So, you know, he wasn’t impressed with that and I completely understand why. And obviously, as I said, it’s not something I should have done, and I’ll learn from [it].”

Liam Lawson could see Red Bull promotion for 2025

Lawson’s drive at RB is seen as a rehearsal for a potential seat at Red Bull next season, as the team grows frustrated with Sergio Perez.

The Mexican, who is paid £11m-a-year by Red Bull, has not finished inside the top five since the start of the season and trails Max Verstappen by over 200 points in the Drivers’ Championship.

It is clear that Perez is having a big effect on the team’s ability to defend their Constructors’ Championship, but the Mexican is reportedly demanding Red Bull pay $20m (£16m) to terminate his contract.

Lawson is tipped as the ‘number one’ driver to replace Perez in this instance, given how well he has embedded himself at RB over the last three races.
