Liam Lawson’s Formula 1 destiny depends entirely on his ability to deliver at short notice for the Visa Cash App RB team.

The Kiwi has a shot of a shock promotion to the senior Red Bull team if he can tick a few boxes set by the big figures.

It also relies on Sergio Perez continuing to struggle and back teammate Max Verstappen up, which has been a theme over the last few seasons.

The Mexican holds a contract for 2025 currently, but he needs to pick up his performance if he wants to remain with the Milton Keynes-based outfit.

Liam Lawson reveals Red Bull ‘expectations’ for future drive

Lawson previously noted that he is expected to perform better than new teammate Yuki Tsunoda if he wants any chance at a promotion.

Now he has mentioned another criterion of his, which he told Sky Sports F1 of after an excellent performance at the United States Grand Prix.

“The goal every weekend is points,” he said. “I know that they have an expectation of me, but at the end of the day, I’ve got an expectation of myself as well, to do a job.

“I want to stay in Formula 1 and have a full-time seat next year, and these races are my key to doing that. From my side, I’m taking it weekend by weekend.

“This weekend was strong, we need to now focus on Mexico, but I’m well aware of the expectation they have of me.”

Who else is competing for a prime F1 seat with Red Bull in 2025?

Lawson is competing with a few drivers for a 2025 opportunity, which has been a daunting seat to fill over the past few years.

Many have tried and failed to beat Verstappen, including Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Sergio Perez in the second seat.

That won’t put the Kiwi off, who is up against Perez, Tsunoda and maybe one Franco Colapinto after his incredible performances for Williams put him on the radar of the grid.

Lawson is considered to be the front-runner for the drive though, and with a few more points finishes, he stands a great chance of remaining in the sport.

It’s crazy to think that someone with his level of talent has yet to have a full-time drive from the start of a Formula 1 season at all.
