Lewis Hamilton told he misjudged one thing about Ferrari that Fernando Alonso proved ‘doesn’t work’

Lewis Hamilton had the worst season of his 19-year F1 career during his first term as a Ferrari driver in 2025, and his problems in Maranello also continued outside the track.

The 40-year-old joined the Scuderia at the start of 2025 after electing to start a new chapter after enduring back-to-back winless seasons with Mercedes over 2022 and 2023. Hamilton agreed to sign for Ferrari back in February 2024, but the move would not be worth the wait.

Hamilton failed to claim a single Grand Prix podium in a season for the first time in 2025, as he also penned his lowest points total under the scoring system that F1 introduced in 2010. The Briton scored 156 points over the 24 rounds, of which he scored 21 over the six Sprints.

The only highlight that the Scuderia would ultimately celebrate in 2025 came back in round two, when Hamilton won the F1 Sprint in China from pole position. He also sealed P3 in the Sprint in Miami, but his lows far outweighed the positives en route to sixth in the standings.

Lewis Hamilton was wrong to think that his ‘immortality’ at Mercedes would inspire change at Ferrari

Charles Leclerc also only managed P5 in the F1 drivers’ standings with 242 points, as Ferrari finished 2025 fourth in the constructors’ standings. Hamilton had declared that Ferrari had “every ingredient” to win a title upon his arrival, but he then quickly realised he was wrong.

Hamilton regularly gave Ferrari documents citing various changes that he wants the pride of Italy to make, having compared their methods to what he experienced with Mercedes. The Stevenage-born star won six of his joint-record seven drivers’ titles over 12 years in Brackley.

But Christian Danner thinks Hamilton misjudged the power of his “immortality” at Mercedes to inspire change at Ferrari. Multiple F1 drivers in the past have also proven that you cannot get Ferrari to adopt methods that teams based in England embrace and enjoy success with.

Danner has told sport.de: “Lewis had achieved a kind of immortality at Mercedes. When he went to Ferrari, he thought that now his greatness, which he undoubtedly possesses, would come into play. You can’t establish the processes of an English team in Maranello.

“It doesn’t work. Alain Prost couldn’t do it, Fernando Alonso couldn’t [and] Sebastian Vettel couldn’t, and now Hamilton can’t, either.”

Ferrari have not won the F1 drivers’ championship since Kimi Raikkonen secured the title in 2007, when he denied Hamilton as a rookie with McLaren by only one point. The Scuderia’s wait for another constructors’ title also goes back to 2008, when Hamilton won his first title.

So, having secured 84 of his record 105 Grand Prix wins, 78 of his record 104 pole positions and 154 of his record 202 podiums with Mercedes from 2013 to 2024, Hamilton saw several areas where Ferrari can improve. But his aim to influence vast changes somewhat backfired.

It has been said that some at Ferrari resented Hamilton’s documents citing changes he feels could be important for the Scuderia to return to the top of F1. Additionally, Damon Hill thinks Hamilton struggles to convince Ferrari that he is right, given Leclerc dominated him in 2025.
