Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton has shared whether he thinks he can catch Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in the Drivers’ Championship this season.

Hamilton was speaking to the media during the driver’s press conference, via Sky Sports F1, ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The fanfare in Nevada has already begun with drivers taking part in a variety of events to promote one of the most highly anticipated races in years.

It will be a late start for those in the USA and a very early start for those on the other side of the Atlantic, but plenty of fans will be tuning in to watch the brand-new race.

Although Max Verstappen has already sewn up the Drivers’ Championship for a third year running, Perez and Hamilton are still battling for second place.

It’s been a far-from-ideal season for both experienced drivers.

Perez has been shown by Verstappen who could still finish the year 300 points ahead of his teammate.

Meanwhile, Hamilton is set to go back-to-back seasons without a race win and has got the very best out of his car all season.

Asked how he sees the battle for P2 with 32 points separating the two drivers, Hamilton joked: “Yeah, I’m coming for you!”

However, he quickly admitted that it was probably a step too far and said: He’s too far away now, to be honest.

“30 points in two races, he would have to have two disasters and I would have to be second basically.

“But for me, honestly it really doesn’t make any difference if I’m second or third.

“I think we’ve still had an amazing year given the car that we’ve had. We never thought that we would be fighting for second in the Constructors’ [Championship] and knocking on the door of the most dominant car probably of our era.

“I’m grateful for just being where we are and having a half-decent season, much better than last year.”

If Perez does finish ahead of Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship, it would be the first time Red Bull have ever secured a one-two in the standings.

It shows just how dominant their car has been this year that Perez can be so far off his teammate and still be the next-best driver on the grid.

Hamilton’s Mercedes has been good on some tracks but diabolical on others as he showed in Brazil.

That inconsistency is what makes finishing in the top three of the standings so impressive even if he can’t catch up to Perez.
