A dejected Lewis Hamilton had some words of consolation for Ferrari after an errant strategy led to a P5 finish for him.

Despite starting P3 during the race, Hamilton and Ferrari’s poor tyre strategy led to him having to settle for a P5 finish at the Austrian Grand Prix.

In particular, it was the hard tyres that cost Lewis Hamilton a lot of lap time during the race, as he wasn’t able to make up ground later in the race.

George Russell managed to win the Austrian Grand Prix in the end, something that allowed him to take back second place in the championship standings.

Hamilton had pointed out Ferrari’s Achilles Heel during qualifying, but it was another issue that the Briton identified earlier that ended up costing them the race.

Lewis Hamilton predicted Ferrari’s tyre degradation that cost them at Austrian GP

In his unbroadcast radio message right after the Austrian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton admitted that the tyre degradation issue that he warned Ferrari about earlier in the weekend cost them the race.

However, Hamilton made sure to remind the team that they must continue to work hard and not let this result get them down.

“It was a tough race, guys. It was a really tough race. I told you deg was gonna be bad… But, great job in the pit stops.

“I know this is not the result we want. It was looking much better at the start, but let’s just keep pushing. Let’s bag these points and try to come back stronger.”

It’s surprising that Ferrari didn’t anticipate the issues that Hamilton pointed out, especially if he gave them enough notice to try and figure it out.

Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari cannot let Austrian GP setback derail championship push

Even with a disappointing result today, Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari must continue working on their car and strategy going forward.

His result today was not so bad that he must rule out a push for a championship. However, it has made things that much tougher for him going forward.

Kimi Antonelli is well aware of Hamilton’s threat and is unlikely to relax just because he had one poor result after how strong he looked in Barcelona.

But for Ferrari and Hamilton, it is now crucial to try and get the most out of their car and upgrades heading into Silverstone.
