Lewis Hamilton will inevitably face retirement questions when he returns to the F1 paddock for pre-season testing. Some believe this will be Hamilton’s last season in F1.
Ferrari haven’t publicly disclosed the length of Hamilton’s contract, but it’s believed to run until the end of 2027. The seven-time world champion himself has said that he signed a lengthy deal.
It’s not known whether all three years are guaranteed, though. There is a rumour, for instance, that Hamilton must opt into the 2027 season himself.

During his first year with Ferrari, Hamilton appeared uncomfortable in the car and, to a lesser degree, the team itself. If he can’t solve those problems and the anguish continues on track, perhaps the sporting relationship will come to a mutual end.
Lewis Hamilton could become a Ferrari ambassador after F1 retirement
But Hamilton may remain within the Ferrari company even after he stops driving their F1 car. ESPN believe there are ‘options’ in his contract covering his post-retirement plans.
He might take on an ‘ambassadorial role’ within the company, which is sure to be mutually beneficial. It would be a lucrative venture for Hamilton, while Ferrari would continue to tap into his unique marketing power.

Hamilton hasn’t scored a podium in red yet, but he remains the most successful driver in F1 history with 104 Grand Prix wins.
It was estimated last year that Ferrari would earn over £80m through merchandising and sponsorship after signing Hamilton. He has already helped them advertise their road cars, including the F80, in conjunction with Charles Leclerc.
Lewis Hamilton wanted £200m for Mercedes
The Daily Mail reported in 2023 that Hamilton was in negotiations with Mercedes over a similar ambassadorial role. He was ready to commit for 10 years in exchange for a total salary of £200m.
Mercedes apparently ‘baulked’ at those demands, and while Hamilton did eventually extend his contract, he opted out of the second year.
Mercedes were also unwilling to give Hamilton a long contract due to his age, but Ferrari put a three-year agreement on the table.
Some at Maranello may be regretting that decision, particularly given that Carlos Sainz had been driving at a high level, but Hamilton still has time to justify their faith.
