Lando Norris has spoken about what the main difference is between a ‘good’ and a ‘great’ driver in Formula 1.
Norris, 26, ascended to the top of motorsports last year when he clinched his maiden F1 world championship, beating Max Verstappen by a mere two points after a thrilling end to the campaign.
Before getting his hands on the trophy, Norris had to battle hard as he was trailing his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, by a fair margin heading into the summer break.
A drastic drop in form from Piastri, plus a string of impressive displays from Norris, meant he joined the likes of Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel in the history books.

Lando Norris reveals he is ‘always’ trying to get into a ‘subconscious state’
Speaking to former Sky Sports F1 reporter Rachel Brookes in her book, ‘F1 Racing Drive’, Norris was asked about the difference between ‘good’ and ‘great’ drivers in the sport.
In response, the 26-year-old pointed out that great drivers have the ability to’ turn from conscious to unconscious’ and still ‘make an uncomfortable feeling still fit into the unconscious’.
He added that it is something he is trying to do and that it will take important steps like ‘knowledge, rehearsal and practice’ to achieve it.
Brookes wrote: “Lando Norris said: ‘This is where you see the difference between great drivers and good drivers.
“‘There are thousands of good drivers out there; the difference with a great driver is that he is able to turn from conscious to unconscious and somehow make an uncomfortable feeling still fit into the unconscious
“‘I guess that is a wonderful thing if you can choose to access it. I am always trying to get into that subconscious state, and that is only really accessible by knowledge, rehearsal, practice, preparation, and it just being your day sometimes.
“‘Trying to connect on the days you don’t feel it is like trying to make a relationship work when you know it’s over.’”

Over the years, there have been multiple world-class drivers in F1, including the likes of Hamilton, Verstappen, Fernando Alonso and Ayrton Senna.
It has been well documented that they each possess a particular skill that makes them stand out from the rest.
For example, Norris’ teammate, Piastri, has previously stated that Hamilton is always ‘very clean’ on track and has also made a big difference in the world.
Speaking to Brookes, Piastri said: “Purely on stats and also outside of the stats, though, the impressive thing about Lewis Hamilton is not just the amount of wins and championships he has.
“But also the way he’s gone about it, he has always been very clean on track; he has also made a very big difference in the world, using F1 as the platform.
“I think that is definitely something Lewis has that maybe not every driver in that category does. I’m still racing against Lewis and Max, but I think Max, as well, will ultimately go down as one of the best of all time.”
