Lando Norris has admitted that he has ‘accepted’ what McLaren must do in order for him to defend his Formula 1 world title.

Back in 2025, Norris became the 11th British driver to win an F1 world championship as he finished two points ahead of Max Verstappen.

Heading into 2026, Norris was expected to be firmly in the title race alongside Mercedes duo George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.

However, it has been a tough start to the campaign for Norris, as he currently sits sixth in the standings with 58 points, 98 points adrift of leader Antonelli.

Lando Norris has ‘accepted’ what McLaren must do for him to defend F1 title

Speaking to Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo ahead of the Barcelona Grand Prix, Norris admitted that defending his title in 2026 will be ‘difficult’.

The 26-year-old stated he has ‘accepted’ that his title hopes could be over if McLaren are not doing their job ‘perfectly’.

Norris explained: “Sometimes, no matter how much people think you’re the best in the world, you can’t defend your title. Now I’m trying to defend my title, but I can’t even finish a race. Formula 1 can be so unpredictable.

“Especially because we’ve seen in previous years, when Max has won, that they were also able to win amidst regulation changes. But this is the biggest regulation change we’ve ever had.

“This presented an additional challenge for us as a team, as last year we had to concentrate intensely to win both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships.

“With completely new regulations, it’s impossible to get the most out of last year and this year. It’s practically impossible. We knew we’d be at a disadvantage this year. We expected to be a bit better than we are now.”

Norris went on to state that his feelings are ‘complicated’, touching on last year’s ability to fight for wins while admitting that he currently doesn’t have any chance.

Norris continued: “You can’t compare my title defence to Max’s. You can’t compare Hamilton’s to Max’s. It can’t be compared to Schumacher’s. Formula 1 is completely different every year.

“But, of course, we have the expectation that if we win one season, we should win again the next. That’s the level we want to be at.

“When there are so many teams doing such a good job, like Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes, as soon as you don’t do it perfectly—and I think I’ve already accepted that—it’s going to be difficult.

“It’s a complicated feeling: last year I was able to win, and I was able to fight. And now, this year, I don’t have any chance.”

Despite Norris’ honest admission, McLaren produced an impressive Friday in Barcelona.

Norris finished first in FP2 ahead of Russell and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. The Brit will hope to continue the early momentum into qualifying on Saturday afternoon.
