Lando Norris could consider his McLaren future if two things happen amid Oscar Piastri uncertainty

Oscar Piastri is now being linked with a move away from McLaren amid the fallout from the 2025 F1 Singapore Grand Prix, and Lando Norris is not guaranteed to stay, either.

The Woking team have the joint-longest tenured driver line-up on the 2025 grid, with Norris and Piastri in their third campaign as teammates. Only Aston Martin also retained their line-up of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll this year, as the other eight teams rang the changes.

Yet the 2026 season could mark the final year in which Aston Martin and McLaren field their current line-ups. Alonso is considering retiring from F1 in 2026, and it is now said that Piastri is flirting with Ferrari about a move in 2027 after growing unhappy with his role at McLaren.

The Singapore GP proved to be one catalyst for the reports suggesting that Piastri may leave McLaren at the close of 2026. Piastri was frustrated after Norris hit him in the Singapore GP, having felt the papaya crew ought to have intervened in the racing incident that decided P3.

Lando Norris could consider his McLaren future if he loses to Oscar Piastri in 2025 and 2026

Piastri signed a new £19m a year McLaren contract in March, which tied him down through 2028. Norris is also under contract to McLaren through at least 2028 on a £26m a year deal, which includes an option to possibly extend the Briton’s terms through the 2029 F1 season.

Yet FOX Sports reports that Norris could follow in Piastri’s footsteps and consider his future with McLaren beyond the 2026 season. The 25-year-old faces the same situation as his 24-year-old teammate in that any exit would not be ‘easy’, but parting ways is not impossible.

Norris is not currently believed to be reconsidering his commitment to McLaren, whom the Briton has driven for since his F1 debut in the 2019 season. Yet Norris may consider a move away from McLaren if he loses to Piastri in the 2025 campaign and also in the 2026 season.

Piastri leads Norris by 22 points atop the 2025 F1 drivers’ championship, with six Grand Prix and three F1 Sprint events to play. The Australian also leads their Sprint results (2-1), Sprint Qualifying (3-0) and Grand Prix qualifying (10-8) records, but not Grand Prix results (8-10).

Red Bull have held an interest in Lando Norris since before his F1 debut in 2019

Norris has remained loyal to McLaren throughout his F1 career, and has helped the Woking team go from being one of the slowest crews to winning back-to-back constructors’ titles in 2024 and ‘25. Norris or Piastri may also win McLaren’s first drivers’ title since 2008 this year.

Yet losing to Piastri in 2025 and ‘26 could potentially test Norris’ commitment at a time when the F1 driver market could explode. Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Stroll and Carlos Sainz are all set to be out of contract in 2026, and Mercedes and Red Bull are yet to finalise their 2026 plans.

Red Bull have always admired Norris, and their interest in signing the Briton for their second team (then called Toro Rosso) helped force McLaren to give him his F1 debut in 2019. Norris was also linked with Red Bull again before he agreed to his current contract in January 2024.
