McLaren driver Lando Norris took the lead in the drivers’ championship on Sunday, but the crowd at the Mexico City Grand Prix weren’t entirely happy with the result.
Lando Norris secured the biggest winning margin of the season with an incredible performance at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
McLaren once again showed that they had the fastest car on the grid, but only in the hands of Norris, with Oscar Piastri losing his lead in the drivers’ championship after another tricky weekend.
Norris took pole position with an unbelievable lap, while his teammate could only set the eighth-quickest time, before benefitting from Carlos Sainz’s five-place grid penalty to move up to seventh.
The Australian would eventually finish fifth, with Norris’ other championship rival, Max Verstappen, denied by a late virtual safety car in his bid to finish second ahead of Charles Leclerc and close the gap in the championship even further.
Leclerc sent a cheeky message to Verstappen over the team radio during the closing laps, but half a minute down the road, Norris was enjoying arguably the most dominant race weekend of his Formula 1 career.
However, when Norris spoke in front of the amazing stadium section of the circuit before heading onto the podium, audible boos could be heard from the crowd.
Norris initially responded to the booing, and journalist Julianne Cerasoli has explained why the Mexican fans feel that way, before naming their ‘most celebrated’ driver of the weekend.

Lando Norris booed at the Mexican Grand Prix as fans believe he’s received unfair advantage over Oscar Piastri
Posting on X after the race, Cerasoli said:
Cerasoli: “Many people are asking me why Norris was booed. In fact, he was booed throughout the entire weekend here in Mexico City.
“The crowd was more on the side of Piastri and, especially, Verstappen.”
The boos were then brought up in the press conference, with Cerasoli continuing on X: “The boos are the subject of the press conference.
“A Mexican journalist told Norris that they are because Mexicans want him to return the three points that, in their view, Lando unfairly won over Piastri at Monza.”
When one fan asked if it was because Norris was British, Cerasoli was quick to suggest that this wasn’t the case and said that Lewis Hamilton was the most popular driver at the circuit.
She revealed: “The most celebrated driver of the weekend was Hamilton.”

How Lando Norris responded to being asked about the booing at the Mexico City Grand Prix
During the official post-race press conference, the booing was mentioned to Norris, and he said: “People can do what they want, honestly. They have the right to do it if they want to do it. So I think that’s sport sometimes.
“Of course, you don’t want it. I prefer if people cheer for me. But I don’t know. Who knows?”
Journalist Carlos Jalife explained to Norris that a poll done of Mexican fans suggested that he should have given back three points to Piastri after being handed back a position at the Italian Grand Prix.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Lando Norris | 357 |
| 2 | Oscar Piastri | 356 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 321 |
| 4 | George Russell | 258 |
| 5 | Charles Leclerc | 210 |
| 6 | Lewis Hamilton | 146 |
| 7 | Andrea Kimi Antonelli | 97 |
| 8 | Alexander Albon | 73 |
| 9 | Nico Hulkenberg | 41 |
| 10 | Isack Hadjar | 39 |
In response, Norris said: “Sure. If they want to think that, then they certainly have the right to—they can think whatever they want.
“I guess from us as a team, of course, we try and do things fairly. That was the comment we made back then.
“The same with, you know, two years ago in Budapest, when I could have won the race and had to let Oscar back through and let him win a race he deserved to win. It was no different to that, really.
“It was an incorrect decision that we made as a team to box him first, or me first here. And, yeah, to be honest, if you want to have the three points, they can.
“But they have the right to think whatever they want. But, yeah, like Oscar deserved the win last year in Budapest, I deserve to be ahead at Monza. Simple as that.”
The hope for Piastri and McLaren will be that whoever wins the championship, those three points ultimately don’t matter.
However, if the season ended now, that switch would be the reason why Norris becomes the newest Formula 1 world champion.
