At one point in the season, Kimi Antonelli looked like the runaway favourite to win the world championship.

Antonelli’s recent dip in performances has not come at an ideal time for the Italian driver. In Barcelona, his five-race winning streak came to an end due to a power unit issue.

And while he managed to secure a P3 finish at the Austrian Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli did not have a strong performance, especially at the start of the race.

The young Italian was frustrated throughout the weekend, especially after seeing his teammate George Russell snatch pole in a controversial Q3 session.

But his radio message right after he finished the Austrian Grand Prix was the first sign of him getting frustrated in this championship battle.

Kimi Antonelli couldn’t even be happy with P3 podium finish

After his race was over, Kimi Antonelli was congratulated and simultaneously consoled by Peter Bonnington, his race engineer, over the radio.

Antonelli was very critical of himself, discarding his entire performance, especially his poor start to the race at the Red Bull Ring.

Bono: “Nice work, Kimi, P3 mate. So close, there.”

Kimi: “Yeah, I had a s— race mate, a s— start.”

B: “I wasn’t going to mention those opening laps, but we’ll review those.”

K: “But the pace was good at the end?”

B: “Yeah, it was pretty good.”

Kimi Antonelli must learn to accept adversity and difficult times in his maturation journey

Over the last few races, we have seen glimpses of the immaturity that Antonelli still possesses as a young driver, having not experienced this level of success in Formula 1 before.

Toto Wolff backs Antonelli to be a future star, as does most of the top brass at Mercedes. But he cannot continue to be as immature or get so easily rattled as he has so far.

Antonelli had been honest about a title race with Lewis Hamilton, but now he will also have to fend off his teammate, George Russell, in his attempt to win the world championship.

The latter portion of this season has the potential to define Antonelli’s career, for good or bad. It is time for him to step up and show what he is capable of.
