Kevin Magnussen will be banned from participating in the next Formula 1 Grand Prix in Azerbaijan, after picking up a penalty during the race at Monza.

The Dane received a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points on his FIA super licence for a collision with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly during the Italian GP.

The collision took Kevin Magnussen up to a total of 12 points in a 12-month period, which triggered an automatic one-race ban in the sporting regulations.

Haas has not said who will replace him for the next race in Baku on 13th – 15th September but it is expected to be Oliver Bearman, who will make his full-time race debut next season with the American team.

Discussing the penalty there was one driver who came to Kevin Magnussen’s defence, after feeling that it was an unjust outcome given the nature of the collision between the pair according to journalist Samarth Kanal on The Race podcast.

Fernando Alonso defends Kevin Magnussen after one-race ban triggered at Monza

Magnussen was racing alongside Gasly at the Variante della Roggia when the pair made contact, forcing them both to take to the run-off and rejoin.

Fernando Alonso, who has accumulated 22 poles in his F1 career, defended Magnussen after the stewards felt that he was worthy of a 10-second time penalty for the collision with Gasly.

“Ricciardo got a five-second time penalty but he didn’t make massive contact with Nico Hulkenberg. Whereas Hulkenberg got a 10-second time penalty for taking out Yuki Tsunoda To me consistency has been used properly, Magnussen was to blame for that crash,” said Kanal.

Someone who didn’t think that was Fernando Alonso who staunchly defended Magnussen. He’s always been one of the more libertarian drivers and says if he thinks a penalty is heavy-handed.”

Where did Kevin Magnussen pick up his other penalty points?

Magnussen has been under threat of picking up a race ban since the Miami GP earlier this year, when he picked up five penalty points for various collisions and unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Haas was reportedly ‘pretty cross’ with Magnussen after the series of incidents during the race, as he attempted to hold position for his teammate Nico Hulkenberg.

This took him up to 10 having already accumulated points for collisions at the Saudi Arabian GP (3) for a collision with Alex Albon, and the Chinese GP (2) for a rash with Yuki Tsunoda.

He is the first F1 driver to be parked for a race since Romain Grosjean in 2012, which was before the current penalty points system was introduced.

F2 driver Mahaveer Raghunathan was the first driver to be banned under the new system in 2019, while three other drivers picked up bans in 2022 including Oliver Caldwell, Amaury Cordell, and Roy Nissany.
