Oscar Piastri is on the cusp of securing his first world title in Formula 1, and Karun Chandhok has outlined what he now must do to make his dream a reality amid counterintuitive team orders from McLaren.
Lando Norris was able to further reduce Piastri’s championship lead at the last round of racing in Singapore, much to the dismay of the Australian due to a first-lap incident involving the McLaren duo.
The Woking-based racing outfit chose not to take any action against Norris during the race, which has led many to believe that McLaren are favouring Norris in the F1 title fight.
Mark Webber has been pleading Piastri’s case within the McLaren ranks. He was in the same position during his tenure at Red Bull, and won’t let it happen to his client amid his first chance of glory within the sport.
The 24-year-old currently holds a 22-point lead over his British teammate in the F1 standings, and is desperate to see that advantage rise again before things get even more uncomfortable for him.
Karun Chandhok thinks Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris need to be ‘more selfish’ in their F1 title fight against each other
Chandhok was speaking to David Croft and Ted Kravitz during an episode of Sky Sports F1’s Paddock Uncut at the United States Grand Prix, and discussed the current situation that is unfolding within the McLaren garage.
On the topic of the hotly contested title fight between Piastri and Norris, the former F1 driver said: “Now that the constructors’ title is settled, I want to see them being a bit more selfish because this is a life-defining thing they’re fighting for.
“This is not an egg and spoon race at the local preschool. This is a world championship, and they might only have one opportunity.
“Talk to Damon Hill, talk to Jenson Button, talk to Jacques Villeneuve. This is something that matters for the rest of their lives.
Croft then added his two cents, saying: “And where I think this is a bit counterintuitive is that all season long, McLaren have stressed and have been correct when they’ve stressed this, that the drivers are free to race each other, and were not going to interfere as long as they respect each other.”
“But now with one quarter of the season to go, McLaren are now interfering with what the drivers can and can’t do?”

Lando Norris was tight-lipped over the ‘repercussions’ that he will be facing for the incident in Singapore
The comments from Chandhok and Croft came after Norris revealed to Kravitz that he was slapped with ‘repercussions’ for his lap one incident with Piastri in Singapore.
Asked about the course of action taken for the contact between their two drivers, the 25-year-old replied: “Of course, things are reviewed and yeah, there are, and will be repercussions for me to the end of the season.
“So yeah, it’s not like I’ve gotten away with anything, but it was also an incident that, let’s say, was small and there was potential to try and avoid it.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Oscar Piastri | 336 |
| 2 | Lando Norris | 314 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 273 |
| 4 | George Russell | 237 |
“It’s something I never want to do; I said it back after the race. I can’t afford to make contact and have anything happen like what happened because I put just as much risk on my whole championship from something going wrong as I do on whoever I might be racing against.
“So, of course, repercussions for myself. But otherwise, the engagement and how we go racing is the same as it’s always been.”
Norris was asked to expand on what the repercussions may consist of, to which he refused to elaborate.
McLaren have been told to let Piastri and Norris race each other, so news of Norris’ reprimand may cause some further frustration over the management of their drivers’ championships.
