Juan Pablo Montoya has revealed the ‘really cool’ thing that has impressed him about Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

Wolff, 54, is one of the most respected figures in the Formula 1 paddock, having been at the helm of Mercedes since 2013.

During his time as team boss, Mercedes often dominated their rivals, winning eight constructors’ titles in a row from 2014 to 2021.

Wolff has also seen Lewis Hamilton win six world titles, with Nico Rosberg also clinching his maiden world championship under the Austrian’s leadership.

Juan Pablo Montoya impressed by ‘very concise’ Toto Wolff

Speaking recently to AS Colombia, ex-F1 driver Montoya revealed what he learned from the impressive Wolff.

The 50-year-old, who raced for Williams and McLaren during his own career, stated that Wolff has the ability to be ‘very to the point’.

He also added that the Mercedes boss speaks with a tone that is loud enough without being rude.

When asked what type of team principal he would be, Montoya explained: “Christian Horner, I think a mix of Christian, but I’ve learned from watching Toto work; it’s impressive.

“One really cool trait that Toto has is that he’s very concise, very to the point, and he speaks with a tone that is loud enough that people say, ‘Oh’. But, he is not rude, not at all.

“I mean, he scolds you without raising his voice, you know what I mean? And, us Latinos are used to our mum yelling and smacking us with a slipper.”

How badly will Toto Wolff regret Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari if Mercedes do not win the 2026 title?

Montoya also mentioned that in another life, he would love to have a go at being the team principal of an F1 team.

The Colombian stated that for now, he is not looking to go down that route as the commitment is ‘too big’, having labelled it as a ‘365-day-a-year job’.

Montoya also shared that his natural traits could make the role ‘complicated’, citing his inability to wait for a team meeting if someone happens to ‘mess things up’.

He explained: “In another life, I think it would be cool. You need the commitment to do a job like that; it’s too big. It’s a 365-day-a-year job to do it well. So, that’s why I’m telling you, no for now.

“If I do it, I do it quite well and all, but it would be complicated. When I talk to engineers who moved up to higher positions, and I ask ‘What do you do when an engineer is being screwed over?’, and they say ‘We have to keep quiet’. But if I saw someone messing things up, I’m not going to wait for a meeting.”

During his career, Montoya took part in 95 F1 races, winning seven and securing 30 podium finishes and 13 pole positions.

Away from F1, Montoya has also taken part in the IndyCar Series, Champ Car, NASCAR Cup Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

For now, Montoya is often supporting his son, Sebastian, who is currently taking part in the Formula 2 championship for Prema Racing.
