Journalist raves about ‘very impressive’ F1 driver who’s a potential future world champion

Journalist Roberto Chinchero has been raving about McLaren F1 driver Oscar Piastri who he thinks is a potential future world champion.

Chinchero was speaking about the Australian rookie on the F1 Nation Podcast.

He was recalling the relationship he had with former team Prema on his journey to becoming a Formula 1 driver.

Oscar Piastri was one of three rookies on the grid at the beginning of the season, alongside Logan Sargeant and Nyck de Vries.

The Dutchman lost his seat after 10 races and was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo and then subsequently Liam Lawson after an injury caused in part by Piastri.

Sargeant is still yet to score his first F1 point but is getting closer and put in another good performance at Monza.

Oscar Piastri also missed out on a top-ten finish, although Lewis Hamilton was to blame.

The Mercedes driver crashed into him going into the second chicane causing damage that forced him to pit.

Piastri still came away with the fastest lap and has now been touted as a future world champion.

He’s certainly got huge potential but like many things in Formula 1, it will come down to the luck of which car he’s in and whether or not he ever gets a chance to consistently challenge for race wins.

Speaking about the Australian driver, Chinchero said: “He’s the next big thing coming in Formula 1.

“Honestly, I always believed that he’s a good guy, I remember him in Formula Renault, in Formula 3, in Formula 2, very impressive.

“I talk a lot with his team Prema, he won with them in Formula 2, Formula 3.

“They are still using the set-up that Oscar did with them and Andrea Stella said to me a lot of times that this guy’s not only impressive on track, he’s impressive in the factory.

“His method of work is fantastic, he’s very dedicated to his job.

“I’m sure that he’s potentially a world champion and I won’t be surprised if he reaches this target because I think he’s one of the best talents in the last five years.”

McLaren will hope that Piastri can challenge to become world champion while he’s with the Woking-based team.

He earned plenty of plaudits during his first year in Formula 1 and is a great advocate for the success of the junior formulas.

Gabriel Bortoleto just wrapped up the F3 championship and will be hoping to step up to F2 next year.

Theo Pourchaire looks set to be the next champion of that series, but considering last year’s winner Felipe Drugovich hasn’t found an F1 seat yet, motor racing’s youngest talent is now queuing up for a place in Formula 1.
