Following a string of recent crashes in Formula 1 Grands Prix, Jolyon Palmer has told Gabriel Bortoleto exactly what he needs to do in order to regain his confidence on track.
After a relatively successful debut campaign in F1 with Sauber, where glimpses of his talent has seeped through the sub-par machinery that he has been at the wheel of, Gabriel Bortoleto’s recent performances have left a lot to be desired.
In fact, over the last two race weekends, the Brazilian driver has completed just two laps of running in Grand Prix conditions.
Bortoleto crashed out of his home race in Sao Paulo on the very first lap, a day after suffering an awful shunt in the Brazil GP Sprint race.
The following round in Las Vegas saw him career into the side of Lance Stroll at turn one, ending both his and the Canadian’s race prematurely.
Who has been the most impressive rookie of the 2025 Formula 1 season?
Jolyon Palmer tells Gabriel Bortoleto to ‘settle down’ after his most recent crash at the Las Vegas Grand Prix
In Jolyon Palmer’s breakdown of the opening lap on the Las Vegas Strip, he walked through the events that led to Bortoleto’s unfortunate incident with the Aston Martin driver.
The rookie was deemed to have misjudged his braking point on his way to the first turn, leaving Stroll, and the cars beside him, nowhere to go as he slid into the side of them.
The former F1 driver had some words of advice for the youngster on F1’s official YouTube channel, saying, “Bortoleto is in a different league of late breaking, he sends it in, and pick your crash.
“There it is with Lance Stroll who’s minding his own business. Whack. So, Bortoleto out of the race and that is definitely a penalty for the next race for him.
“It’s a bit sloppy from Bortoleto who’s having a lot of crashes at the moment, trying to do too much.
“I think he needs to just settle down to finish his rookie year which has been very good but just not going his way in the last couple.”

Damon Hill thinks Gabriel Bortoleto still has ‘more to prove’ amid his rookie F1 season
Bortoleto’s retirement from the proceedings in Las Vegas marked his fifth retirement of a relatively impressive rookie season.
In the Sauber teammate battle, the Brazilian has held his own against the vastly more experienced Nico Hulkenberg, with their qualifying and Grand Prix results leaning towards the German driver ever so slightly.

However, Damon Hill thinks Bortoleto still has more to prove in F1. In a verdict following his retirement from the Brazilian Grand Prix, the 1996 world champion praised his fellow rookies, but put the young Brazilian into the room for improvement category.
Next year will see Bortoleto take the reins of Audi’s first challenger in F1, where he may be better equipped to fight within the top 10 positions in a Grand Prix.
