Former F1 race winner John Watson has suggested that plenty of fans would have loved to see Hitech allowed to join the Formula 1 grid.

Watson was speaking on The F1 Pod ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend.

As always, one of the big talking points this season has been whether or not the races have been exciting enough.

The American owners of the sport have worked hard to make F1 more dramatic and the events put on around the racing have improved interest.

But if the product on the track isn’t good enough then people won’t stick around to watch.

One of the changes plenty of fans have argued for is the introduction of more teams on the grid.

Four outfits attempted to join Formula 1 this year, with Andretti currently the closest team to entering the sport in the future.

One of the teams rejected by F1 was Hitech and John Watson believes they should have been granted the opportunity to join the grid.

Hitech have established a fantastic reputation in the series below Formula 1 and currently run cars in F2 and F3.

Their driver Isack Hadjar tested for AlphaTauri at the Mexico Grand Prix and has been tipped to enter the sport in the future.

Watson says F1 should have allowed Hitech entry

Speaking about the issue with the number of cars on the grid, Watson said: “I’m only speaking for a lot of the fans out there who would like to see an Andretti team or any other team [join the grid].

“Hitech put in an application as another team to make it 12 teams and their application I understand was rejected.

“I think 12 teams is a nice round number and a dozen teams makes a lot of sense to me, 24 cars on the grid and it can only be good for the fans.

“That’s all that matters, it’s good for the fans.”

Plenty of fans will agree with Watson that Hitech or another team potentially joining Andretti in F1 would be a good thing.

There are barely any opportunities for the best young talent to get onto the grid and having four more available race seats would be perfect.

However, teams are worried about the split in prize money with Williams ‘very strongly’ opposed to Andretti joining the sport, letting alone a 12th team.

It seems as though Formula 1 fans will have a little while longer to see an extra couple of rows added to the back of the grid.
