John Watson believes F1 will want ‘unwritten guarantee’ that championship is won in Las Vegas next year

John Watson has suggested that the organisers of the Las Vegas Grand Prix will want the Drivers’ Championship to be decided at the track from next season.

Watson was speaking to the Daily Mail ahead of what’s set to be a show-stopping event in Sin City.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing hugely important riding on this weekend’s race.

It feels like Max Verstappen has had the title wrapped up for a long time now.

His points tally has reached the point where he would be winning the Constructors’ Championship on his own this year.

There are drivers still fighting for other positions and several teams are still battling it out below Red Bull.

The bottom four teams for example know that a decent points haul on Saturday night could earn them tens of millions in prize money.

However, no championship is going to be decided in Las Vegas this weekend and they may want that to change.

The most dramatic finish in Formula 1 history took place on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021.

Nothing is ever going to reach that level, but Las Vegas would love to have that level of drama on track next year.

Las Vegas want the championship decided there in future

Speaking about the upcoming race, Watson said: “Those races in 1981 and 1982 had the advantage of being title deciders.

“This one doesn’t. It was decided three or four races ago, so it means the event does not quite have the same spotlight on it.

“They love blood, sweat and tears in America — certainly tears and joy — and if I were Formula One I’d have an unwritten guarantee that the world championship is decided in Las Vegas.”

Although the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship is already sewn up, there’s still plenty of intrigue around the Las Vegas GP this weekend.

It will be interesting to see how the tyres cope in low temperatures and how the city copes with the mass disruption.

All of that will be forgotten if the track produces a decent race in the early hours of Sunday morning in the UK.

Any track that dampens Red Bull’s huge advantage will be looked forward to in the future as well.
