Jenson Button has highlighted one thing about Kimi Antonelli that he can’t ‘understand’.

On Saturday afternoon, Antonelli won the Sprint at Silverstone ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, becoming Formula 1’s youngest-ever Sprint winner.

The young Italian then took the momentum from the Sprint into qualifying, setting a number of impressive laps.

In Q3, Antonelli stormed to pole position ahead of the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Hamilton, with the 19-year-old quicker by 0.175 seconds.

Jenson Button says ‘nothing fazes’ Kimi Antonelli after ‘impressive’ British GP pole

Speaking after the session, 2009 F1 world champion Button was left impressed and baffled by Antonelli’s performance.

The 46-year-old labelled Antonelli’s qualifying pace around Silverstone as ‘amazing’ and ‘impressive’, while saying that nothing seems to faze him, which is something he can’t ‘understand’.

Button said on Sky Sports F1: “That was amazing, really impressive. It feels like nothing fazes him. That’s what I don’t understand.”

While speaking to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, Button asked: “We all have bogey tracks, except for Kimi; why is that? I don’t understand, and how relaxed he is.”

In response, the Austrian was quick to state that Antonelli doesn’t show any weaknesses.

Wolff said: “You did pretty well, you’re a world champion, he hasn’t won the world championship yet, we need to consider the big picture.

“He has been compared to the great ones; he has all the traits to be a great one, but you have to lock in the results. He doesn’t show any weaknesses; he was a bit on the back foot, no problem, it doesn’t play any role in his ability to drive fast.”

Reflecting on his own qualifying performance, Antonelli admitted that he was ‘stressed’ during his final flying lap, but managed to put in a ‘tidy’ effort to secure another pole position, his first since the Monaco Grand Prix.

As reported by Sky Sports F1, Antonelli said: “A bit stressed because I never like going first for the last run!

“The last lap was very tidy. I have to be honest, it came altogether. It was very tricky with the wind because it was very gusty and unpredictable.”

Although he will be starting from the best position on the grid, Antonelli will be wary that Leclerc and Hamilton will be looking to get the better of him on the run down to Turn 1.
