James Vowles ‘under pressure’ from Williams’ investors amid poor start to 2026 F1 season

Williams have not met the standards set by their ‘very ambitious’ investors at the start of 2026, according to Ralf Bach. This puts team principal James Vowles under pressure.

Alex Albon qualified 15th for the Australian Grand Prix, with Carlos Sainz unable to leave the garage due to a power unit issue that caused him to stop during FP3.

With Pierre Gasly outpacing Albon in the Alpine, Williams must currently rank as the slowest of the four Mercedes customers. The gap to the front of the field appears to be in the region of two to 2.5 seconds.

James Vowles must ‘take responsibility’ as Williams ambitions not met

Vowles took over at Williams at the start of the 2023 season and has led an impressive overhaul so far. After a 17-point 2024 campaign, they leapt up to fifth in the standings last year and scored two podium finishes.

That strengthened their confidence that they could take a step towards the elite following the regulation changes. Indeed, Williams were the first team to pull their 2025 car out of the wind tunnel, so great was the emphasis on 2026.

But the change in their trajectory quickly became clear as they missed the Barcelona Shakedown in January. It has since emerged that the FW48 is significantly over the weight limit.

Speaking on the F1-Insider YouTube channel, Bach said that Williams’ shareholders were ‘looking very closely’ at the situation.

He said: “Yesterday, we had a question, ‘Which team manager has to leave first?’ I said James Vowles, because he’s under pressure.

“They’re coming from fifth place and the American investors are very, very ambitious. That’s well-known.

“If they miss the first test and the car is overweight while the others aren’t, then someone has to take responsibility for it. That’s why I think they’re looking very closely.

“It’s a curse of doing a good deed. You come fifth, and then you are measured against that.”

Williams’ 2028 race win goal may have to be changed

F1Oversteer previously ranked Vowles as one of the safest team principals, but there was always going to be a lot riding on 2026.

It’s still very early, and the Williams hierarchy won’t rush into any decisions, but the Grove outfit must now adjust their timeline for success.

Previously, Williams targeted victories by 2028, and that objective is now looking far harder to achieve.

Sainz and Albon looked ‘down’ even before the Australian GP weekend had started. One of Vowles’ biggest challenges this year will be keeping the highly-rated duo happy and motivated.
