Williams has confirmed its driver lineup for the 2025 season and beyond after announcing that it has signed Carlos Sainz to race alongside Alex Albon.

The Spaniard has signed a “two-year agreement with options to extend” with Williams beyond the 2026 season and is set to replace American driver Logan Sargeant.

Sargeant has struggled to match the level of Albon throughout the season, having failed to beat him at any Grand Prix qualifying session this year or during the races.

This has led to a fair share of criticism for the American, with former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer lamenting Sargeant’s growing list of ‘random mistakes’ before the summer break.

With the news that Sainz will be joining the team, team principal James Vowles offered some insight into his immediate future when speaking in their official press release.

Questions over whether Williams will replace Sargeant mid-season were levelled when it emerged earlier in the season that a team had approached the FIA with a dispensation request to grant a super licence to a driver who is yet to reach 18 years old.

The governing body subsequently changed the rules to allow special dispensation for any driver who meets the required criteria and is 17 years old.

It was speculated to be from Mercedes to allow young prospect, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, to make an early F1 debut with Williams to replace Sargeant ahead of a rumoured full-time drive at the Silver Arrows in 2026. It subsequently emerged that the request came from Red Bull, who were assessing the chances of one of their junior drivers making an F1 debut.

Amid the uncertainty over Sargeant’s immediate future, Vowles confirmed the status of his drive for the remaining 10 races on the calendar after the summer break.

“I want to thank Logan for everything he has done for the team and know he will continue to fight hard for us in the races ahead,” said Vowles.

Logan Sargeant set to make the switch to IndyCar

Sargeant has yet to score points this year and only managed to score one point in his F1 career at the US GP in 2023, following the late disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

He is likely to make a switch to American single-seater series IndyCar, with his former F1 feeder series team Prema reportedly in the running to sign him when they make their debut in 2025.

The American raced with Prema in Formula 3 during the 2020 season, when he finished third in the championship after a battle with current McLaren F1 driver Oscar Piastri for the title.

With Sargeant out of the picture at Williams and Sainz having made his decision, it means more moves can take place in the busy driver market.
