Valtteri Bottas is hoping to earn a contract extension at the Sauber team ahead of their 2026 transition to Audi. He is one of the last remaining drivers facing an uncertain future.
14 of the 20 are under contract for next year. Of the remaining six, Kevin Magnussen and Zhou Guanyu know they’ll almost certainly have to continue their careers in either a reserve role or a different series.
Sergio Perez and Liam Lawson are both auditioning for their futures in the Red Bull programme in the final six races. Meanwhile, Franco Colapinto is challenging Bottas for the Sauber drive after a magnificent start at Williams.

Colapinto replaced Logan Sargeant at the Italian GP and has already scored four points, rapidly rivalling Alex Albon. McLaren junior Gabriel Bortoleto is also a contender for Audi as he chases the F2 title.
Bottas joined the team at the start of the 2022 season when they were still known as Alfa Romeo. He’d just lost his Mercedes seat to George Russell.
The 35-year-old sits bottom of the drivers’ championship as one of three competitors yet to score a point (along with Zhou and Sargeant). He’s been the quicker driver at Sauber but Zhou’s P11 in Bahrain is keeping him ahead.
Audi may fear Toto Wolff ‘spy’ factor if they re-sign Valtteri Bottas
Bottas is one of the most decorated drivers on the Formula 1 grid having represented Mercedes at the height of their dominance. In addition to 10 wins, he’s scored 20 pole positions and 67 podiums.
As pointed out by F1-Insider, team principal Toto Wolff remains part of Bottas’ management, albeit ‘indirectly’. This could pose a problem for Audi.
It’s ‘hard to imagine’ that they’d want ‘a spy from the competition’ so close to their team. While Bottas may not pass on any information deliberately, Wolff would inevitably learn about the inner workings of the operation.
One may question why they’re concerned about frontrunners Mercedes given Sauber’s scoreless struggles. But Audi want to win titles by 2031, such is their ambition.
‘Marketing’ concerns could also hurt Valtteri Bottas’ 2025 Audi chances
Audi have already signed Nico Hulkenberg for next year, ensuring they have an experienced presence within the team. Like Bottas, he’s started well over 200 Grands Prix.
In theory, then, Mattia Binotto could afford to gamble on a younger driver next to him. That’s why he’s considering Colapinto and Bortoleto.
Bottas may not ‘fit the image’ for Audi, who could form F1’s oldest line-up with an average age of 36. They apparently want to project themselves as a team for the future.
Indeed, one paddock insider says Bottas may not offer the marketing potential required. Colapinto and Bortoleto, by contrast, could bring legions of South American fans.
