Lewis Hamilton is hoping to recover from his dreadful Sao Paulo Grand Prix when Formula 1 returns in Las Vegas next weekend. The two season-ending triple-headers were separated by a three-week break.
Hamilton finished 10th at Interlagos, scoring just one point after wrestling with his bouncing car all weekend. That’s his poorest position at the chequered flag all season.
The seven-time world champion was anonymous in the Sprint race, starting and finishing 11th. Those sessions took place in the dry, but even a monumental downpour wasn’t enough to make him competitive in his Mercedes.
Teammate George Russell produced a fine performance in the other car, maximising its potential in the Sprint with sixth place before coming home fourth in the Grand Prix. Russell looked the favourite for victory after passing Lando Norris and leading the first 40% of the race, but a poorly-timed red flag cost him.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Max Verstappen | 393 |
| 2 | Lando Norris | 331 |
| 3 | Charles Leclerc | 307 |
| 4 | Oscar Piastri | 262 |
| 5 | Carlos Sainz Jr | 244 |
| 6 | George Russell | 192 |
| 7 | Lewis Hamilton | 190 |
| 8 | Sergio Perez | 151 |
| 9 | Fernando Alonso | 62 |
| 10 | Nico Hulkenberg | 31 |
The result saw Russell leapfrog his compatriot in the drivers’ standings. One journalist claims Hamilton has ‘clocked out’ at Mercedes, and he’ll have little interest in that particular battle if so.
But perhaps he’ll arrive in Vegas with fresh motivation to end his historic stint at Mercedes in appropriate fashion. This is one of two races on the calendar where he’s yet to score a podium, alongside Miami – naturally both are new additions.
Las Vegas Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton package is available for £533
Las Vegas Grand Prix organisers are promoting a ‘Lewis Hamilton package’ for the second edition of the race. It includes a three-day ticket in the West Harmon Grandstands, which overlook the straight leading to the final corner.
In addition, customers will get a limited edition Hamilton cap and complimentary food and drink. It was initially priced at $1200 (£951) but has now been reduced by a fitting 44% to $672 (£533).

For reference, three-day seated tickets for Hamilton’s home race at Silverstone start at £409 for 2025. Vegas is a night race, though, which means the sessions take place at less sociable hours.
The second practice session, qualifying and the race all start at 10pm local time. That means attendees can expect to leave the circuit after midnight.
What Lewis Hamilton thinks of the Las Vegas Grand Prix after Max Verstappen criticism
Opinions have been split on the Las Vegas GP since its debut last year. It’s the third US race on the F1 calendar as the sport aggressively pursues growth in the American market.
Last year’s proceedings began with a lavish driver presentation on the ceremony on the starting grid. Las Vegas organisers have listened to Max Verstappen – the world champion ‘really hated it’ – and scrapped it for 2024.
They’ll hope for a far smoother weekend this year after a loose drain cover wrecked Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari in FP1 last time out. Sainz joked that the Las Vegas straight should be renamed after him.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, though, Hamilton came to the event’s defence. He said the entertaining race, which saw Verstappen beat Charles Leclerc, silenced those who had been ‘so negative’.
