Honda’s failure to develop their power unit for Aston Martin has forced F1 teams to give them leeway over the cost cap to address these issues.
Honda were allowed an extra £14 million to spend beyond the cost cap to address Aston Martin’s power unit issues in an effort to try and keep them in Formula 1.
The Japanese outfit’s work on the power unit has been panned by Adrian Newey and Aston Martin for how much it has set them back this season.
Should F1 teams help Honda and give them extra upgrades in 2026?
Aston Martin will bear the cost of Honda’s failure in future seasons with an even tighter cost cap limit, but the priority for both sides is to get the car to a level where it can finish races.
But for F1 teams to allow Honda to exceed the cost cap has less to do with trying to help Aston Martin, but more to do with protecting the entertainment value of the sport.

Formula 1 teams allowing Honda to exceed cost cap is ‘better’ for the health of the sport
Speaking on Nailing The Apex, F1 reporter Tim Hauraney suggested that Formula 1 teams allowing Honda to exceed the cost cap was partly motivated to improve the entertainment quality of the sport.
He noted that teams being close to each other in lap times and competitiveness is good for the entertainment value to attract more fans.
“In Formula 1, the car comes first. You build your race car, then you do your engine to fit it. Now you’re doing the opposite. If your power unit is not working exactly as you want it to, then your upgrades are going to fail, because your upgrades are designed around your power unit…
“Honda needs to deal with their side first. That needs to get addressed. It needs a huge overhaul. That’s where ADOU comes into effect… Honda is so far behind that the teams have allowed them to bypass the budget cap by an enormous amount…
“Teams have allowed there to be a lot of leniency when it comes to Honda trying to fix their problems. That’s a huge step that I’ve never seen in Formula 1 where teams are actually playing ball.
“That’s great for the competition, and it’s good that teams are allowing them to do that. No one is really pushing back and creating controversy around it.
“The amount of money they can spend, that’s also getting pushed by millions. They’re probably like 12-13% behind. It’s an enormous amount… We need things to be closer. Teams know that. It’s better for the show, better for the entertainment…”

When will Aston Martin score their first podium of the Adrian Newey era?
And will they get one at all?
Honda and Aston Martin cannot waste this golden opportunity
It looks like Aston Martin are not resting on their laurels and trying to get to a baseline competitive level before the midpoint of the season.
Adrian Newey is overhauling the AMR26 entirely to try and get the car ready in time for the Belgian Grand Prix in July.
Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, Aston Martin are said to be in pre-season testing mode, working on a gearbox issue that can save them half a second in lap time.
These small improvements, as they get strung together, can help Aston Martin get to a level where they are on the same baseline as all the other teams, before making upgrades to improve competitiveness.
