Helmut Marko’s Red Bull exit has now created a unique problem for Arvid Lindblad’s first F1 season

Red Bull will welcome the only rookie onto the 2026 Formula 1 grid when Arvid Lindblad makes his Racing Bulls debut at the Australian Grand Prix.

The 18-year-old, who was born after Fernando Alonso achieved both of his Formula 1 titles, has impressed in the junior categories.

Now, he has been rewarded with a dream opportunity to compete at the highest level at a team well-known for nurturing talent. Racing Bulls are a big reason why Isack Hadjar is at Red Bull after one year.

Lindblad finished sixth in his only Formula 2 campaign and struggled for consistency at times. There was a lot of pressure on him to be ready for the 2026 F1 regulations.

Racing Bulls were ‘quite happy’ with Lindblad’s post-season test after he spent a lot of time conducting race-like runs in Abu Dhabi. He showed some encouraging signs.

After being asked about new teammate Liam Lawson, Lindblad assured that he is focused on himself for 2026 and not particularly fussed about the other side of the garage.

Helmut Marko’s Red Bull exit means Arvid Lindblad has less support for his rookie F1 season

Alan Permane has lauded Lindblad’s feedback already, which is the sort of talent he might have in common with Max Verstappen.

The young Briton is held in high regard. But might Helmut Marko’s recent exit have just thrown up a curveball that he didn’t expect?

Lindblad blew Red Bull away in 2025, with an impressive FP1 outing at the British Grand Prix, and it would have been part of what convinced them to hand him a promotion.

But the loss of working with someone like Marko could have a profound effect on him in the future. Less advice and support doesn’t do him any favours.

It will be important for his team to remind him why they gave him the chance to race for them if he has a few shaky moments, as Hadjar had in his rookie season.

Otherwise, Lindblad, whom Marko campaigned heavily to get a seat, could be left low on confidence. He needs as much support as they can give him.

Why did Red Bull pick Arvid Lindblad over Yuki Tsunoda for 2026?

At one stage, Laurent Mekies was ‘really struggling’ to drop Yuki Tsunoda, and his experience could have been really useful as the championship enters a new era.

But, for all the data the team has gathered on him since 2021, they clearly felt that Lindblad’s potential upside outweighed anything the Japanese driver might bring, including his Honda sponsorship.

Keeping him on as a test and reserve driver means that if their rookie has a big wobble, he can talk about it with someone like Tsunoda. If he sustains that form, they also have someone who can replace him.

They don’t expect to be title challengers, but Racing Bulls are still on the grid to compete. They’ll have expectations of Lindblad, and he’ll need their full support (as well as Red Bull’s) to achieve them.
