Gianpiero Lambiase has been linked with a move to Aston Martin in recent days, but there may be a new team in the mix for him, as rumours of a Red Bull departure intensify.

Known best for his decade spent as Max Verstappen’s race engineer, he has now been working in Formula 1 for 20 years.

Having joined Red Bull in 2015, he missed his first races in 2025, being replaced by Daniel Ricciardo’s ex-engineer, Simon Rennie, for personal reasons.

Losing someone so close to him would be a killer blow for Verstappen, just weeks on from Helmut Marko’s exit. It truly feels like a new era in Milton Keynes, and Lambiase may be the next departure.

If these are Max Verstappen’s true thoughts, why does he continue to race in F1?

Lambiase looked upset after the 2025 finale, where his driver missed out on the drivers’ championship by just two points. He had been through a lot throughout the season.

Just a few weeks ago, Lambiase told Red Bull he wouldn’t attend 2026 races at all, in a move that was going to prompt change within the team anyway.

Gianpiero Lambiase is in ‘ongoing’ talks with Williams amid Red Bull exit rumours

Although Verstappen once made Lambiase ‘look like an idiot’, the two share a great working relationship and understanding of each other. Their team radio makes for effortless comedy.

But, inevitably, life will get in the way soon enough, with promotions and potential moves a part of motorsport.

Lambiase has been linked with a move to Aston Martin, and his team are worried about what sort of effect that would have on Verstappen.

But they’re not the only team that he’s in talks with, according to Motorsport.com, with negotiations ‘ongoing’ with Williams and James Vowles.

With two teams making a swoop for Lambiase, it feels that the chance of him staying at Red Bull is actually decreasing.

It would be a statement signing for Williams, who have invested heavily in their programme over the last few years. It won’t be long before they are contenders again.

Who is most likely to land Gianpiero Lambiase if he leaves Red Bull?

Both Williams and Aston Martin are believed to be teams in the ascendancy, who have invested heavily over the last few years.

The latter have made more statement signings, such as Adrian Newey, and should be able to outbid the majority of their rivals when it comes to attracting any talent.

But money might not be a motivation for Lambiase. At the age of 45, other things can become more important in life, such as family. That decision should be respected, especially by the fans.

It’s why any call to leave Red Bull might not come just from a career standpoint. Maybe he harbours hopes of becoming a team principal one day, and that may not be possible where he is right now.
