Nurburgring 24 Hours legend Olaf Manthey has told German fans to ‘bow down’ to Max Verstappen as his appearance at the 2026 race has skyrocketed interest in the sport.
Verstappen took part in the Nurburgring 24 Hours this weekend as he continues his exploits outside of Formula 1 amid his criticism of the 2026 regulation changes.
Racing with Dani Juncadella, Jules Gounon and Lucas Auer, the Red Bull driver’s presence at the Nordschleife has gained widespread fan and media attention.

Everyone in the paddock says Verstappen’s appearance is ‘so cool’ as he looks to expand into other motorsport categories. He has brought significant exposure to the race, with the event at the Nurburgring being a sell out.
Verstappen made work more difficult for his mechanics due to his presence, but it has brought attention to the sport that is desperately needed, as Manthey and Timo Glock have noted.

Olaf Manthey says fans need to ‘bow down’ to Max Verstappen after Nurburgring appearance
Glock spoke to Motorsport-Magazin about the lack of talent coming through in Germany and how exposure at the Nurburgring has been low for some time.
Verstappen’s appearance has brought multiple fans and media to the event, giving the nation the attention that it needs. Manthey even said, as per Glock, that fans need to ‘bow down’ to Verstappen for his efforts.
The former F1 driver said: “So, to recap, we had a great interview earlier. We’ve been doing a Sky feature throughout the weekend here – a great interview with Olaf Manthey.
Which of Max Verstappen’s Grand Prix wins will go down in F1 history as his very best? 🤩
“And I also asked him why he thinks Max is putting himself through this or enjoying it, and he said we should all thank him, we should all bow down before him, that he’s here, because he’s shining so much light back on motorsport in Germany.
“So as I just said, I have no idea how often the Nordschleife has been mentioned worldwide in recent weeks and months. We must all be grateful for that.
“And the way he does it – I’ve said a few times already – for me, he’s an absolute figurehead for the sport’s home country, coming here with his packed schedule and having such fun doing it – that says it all. So, it’s simple: I can only take my hat off to him.”
