Gerhard Berger has suggested that Mercedes have the best current driver line-up on the Formula 1 grid.
Berger was speaking to journalist Tom Clarkson on the F1 Nation Podcast ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull have produced one of the most dominant seasons in Formula 1 history thus far.
The Austrian team have already broken the record for the most consecutive wins by a constructor.
Verstappen has also just taken the driver’s record off Sebastian Vettel after winning in Monza to take his tally to ten straight wins.
However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Red Bull driver combination is the strongest.
In fact, Berger believes that Mercedes have the best current line-up on the grid.

No one on the grid can come close to Lewis Hamilton’s seven World Championships just yet.
While Berger believes that his teammate George Russell is only getting better with each passing race.
Berger impressed with Mercedes line-up
Asked which team has the best driver combination on the grid, Berger said: “I think it’s Mercedes because [George] Russell is doing an extremely good job, [Lewis] Hamilton is Hamilton, no question.
“In the Red Bull, you have Max [Verstappen], he’s more a one-man show.
“I like very much the driver line-up of McLaren, it’s very strong, but not experienced enough maybe.
“But I would put them also very strong. I like also the Ferrari line-up, I think the line-up is OK.
“In Ferrari, if it doesn’t work the discussion is around the drivers but I think the drivers are fine. I would say Mercedes.”

Mercedes clearly agree with Berger that Hamilton and Russell is the best current driver line-up.
They just extended both of their contracts to keep them at the team until 2025.
The team are already putting plans in place for when Hamilton or Russell will eventually leave the team.
However, for now Hamilton and Russell will hope that the team can deliver a car in 2024 that can compete with Red Bull on a weekly basis.
In more even cars, Mercedes could finally break Red Bull’s grasp on the sport right now.
