George Russell did something a Formula 1 team boss had ‘never’ seen when he applied for his first seat in the sport.
Russell, 28, is currently locked in a battle with Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 world championship.
The Brit, who won the season-opener in Australia, is trailing teenager Antonelli by 20 points ahead of next weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.
Russell is one of the finest drivers of his generation, having impressed at Williams before being chosen to be Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate in 2021, replacing Valtteri Bottas.
However, before he got his chance at Williams, Russell was trying to get himself a seat at multiple teams.
If Kimi Antonelli wins the title, how much would it damage George Russell’s reputation?
Otmar Szafnauer and Rob Smedley recall George Russell’s F1 application
Speaking on the latest episode of the High Performance Racing podcast, ex-Force India team boss Otmar Szafnauer and former Williams race engineer Rob Smedley recalled being sent a presentation by Russell.
As Smedley rcalls, Russell sent a PowerPoint presentation to Claire Williams explaining why he should be the team’s next racing driver.
Smedley said: “This is George, who sent a PowerPoint to Claire Williams to explain why he should be the next racing driver. He sent it to Claire, I saw it, it came to Williams.”
At this point, Szafnauer, who was Force India team boss at the time, said: “He sent me the same. And I invited him in. He came in with it to tell me why Force India should be hiring him as a race driver.”
When asked why he didn’t hire Russell, Szafnauer added: “We didn’t have a spot, contracted. But I remember calling Toto [Wolff] and saying, ‘I like this kid’.
“I’ve never experienced that in my 28 years, where a driver without a manager came in and said, ‘Hey, look at this presentation’. Never, only George. I liked it. I thought, ‘Good on you’.”
Do you think Kimi Antonelli will become Mercedes’ No. 1 driver?

Smedley then added that he instantly thought Russell was ‘nerdy’ as the presentation included all his statistics.
He said: “He put all his stats together. He sent it to Claire, and she sent it to me and Paddy Lowe and I kind of thought, a bit nerdy for a driver. But wow, a lot of detail, and he’s really gone into this.
“There was a little bit of, and George won’t mind me saying this because it was a long, long time ago, there’s a little bit of naivety in there as well.
“Not yet 20, presenting himself for a 19-year-old like that, I’ve never seen that before or since.”
Whatever was in that presentation, it must have worked, as Russell is now in his eighth season as an F1 driver, and he now has a wonderful opportunity to win his maiden world championship at Mercedes.
