Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur has admitted that he ‘wasn’t happy at all’ after Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton failed to secure pole position for the Miami Grand Prix Sprint.

Leclerc started Friday’s sessions with a bang as he clinched top spot in FP1 ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren star Oscar Piastri.

The Monegasque then finished second in SQ1 before going fastest in SQ2, but things sadly unravelled in SQ3.

It was expected that Leclerc could challenge for pole position, but he managed only a lap good enough for fourth, behind the likes of Piastri, Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris.

Leclerc finished 0.370 seconds behind Norris’ best lap, with Hamilton further down in seventh, 0.749 seconds adrift of pole position.

Fred Vasseur ‘not happy’ after Ferrari’s disappointing Miami Sprint qualifying

Speaking to Sky Sports Italy after the session, Ferrari team boss Vasseur admitted that he was not happy with how Sprint qualifying went.

After being informed that Leclerc was not happy with the results, Vasseur replied: “When you’re first in Q1 and second in Q2 and then finish fourth, you can’t be happy. I wasn’t happy at all, either, on the pit wall.

“But that’s how it went. Tonight we have to understand what went wrong and try to do better, not to repeat the mistakes, tomorrow.”

He added: “In a way there is a bit of frustration because this morning we were first and second, instead now we have closed quarters at the end of the SQ3.

“We have to understand what we did wrong, because we couldn’t put everything together. The positive aspect is that the potential was there and was visible since this morning. This is encouraging.”

Lewis Hamilton ‘didn’t feel particularly great’ during Miami Sprint qualifying

Despite a promising start to the 2026 season, Hamilton was once again left searching for answers after qualifying.

The 41-year-old Brit admitted that he thought his Ferrari would be much quicker than it showed during Sprint qualifying.

Hamilton said to Sky Sports: “We didn’t really know what to expect, I’d hoped that it would be better but yeah, the car didn’t feel particularly great.

“I have no idea. I thought we would be stronger than we were today. We’ll have to do some work overnight to try and figure out why we’re not that quick.

“I was hopeful coming here, positive that we would be much higher but it’s not meant to be.”
